DEVELOPING: Taylor Sheridan is reportedly returning to Cinema. That’s at least according to Josh Brolin, who confirmed on the press junket for Ridley Scott’s The Dog Stars that Sicario 3 is 1) in the worlds & 2) being written by Sheridan. This isn’t good news. This is fantastic news....

Lioness might be Taylor Sheridan’s best show. Featuring three Oscar winners (Zoe Saldaña, Nicole Kidman & living legend Morgan Freeman), the entire cast top to bottom is elite - everyone delivers an outstanding performance. Matching the acting is the writing- Sheridan’s writing is also elite. The armed forces is a space Sheridan has had success with in the past (see Sicario) & his return to the genre with Lioness is a welcome one. Above all, this show is incredibly unpredictable, a key ingredient that I think is necessary to make a show a hit.

Hell or High Water is still the best thing Taylor Sheridan has ever written. In the decade since he wrote this film, Sheridan’s found himself at the center of Hollywood. He’s as coveted of a writer/director as there is right now. With that said…this is still his best script.

I’ve written about Taylor Sheridan a lot this week but that’s because the press junket he’s running for his new book has totally captivated me. Sheridan is notably candid. Not only is he honest/upfront, his story is really interesting: how many second-tier actors like Sheridan just suddenly turn into industry-leading screenwriters in their 40s? It’s a fascinating story & makes me want to watch more of his work, like his show The Madison.

DEVELOPING: Sicario 3 is actively in development, that’s according to Josh Brolin in a recent interview in which he confirmed that the long-awaited threequel is happening and that production is expected to begin in the near future. I love both the first & second Sicario films & would absolutely want to see a third. I’ll keep my eye out for more news on this one.

Wind River is not Taylor Sheridan’s best script and that says something. This movie is unbelievable on so many levels but it’s probably Sheridan’s thirst best script behind Hell or High Water and Sicario. All three films demonstrate Sheridan’s ability to move plot forward with both action & meaningful dialogue. It’s why he’s one of the best screenwriters in the game.

Ridley Scott is a legend. There’s no other way to put it. You guys know this is Ridley Scott Week but in this week alone, we’ve lost Tim Curry & Dolly Parton, each of whom were 80. With that context, how can you not take a moment to appreciate that at age 88, Ridley Scott is still making films? Not to mention he’s not cutting corners/using AI. The man will be 90 in a matter of months but he’s still fighting for Cinema. Appreciate legends while you can. At least that’s what I’m doing.

Given that it’s Ridley Scott Week, I think now is as good of a time as any to revisit The Last Duel. Written by Nicole Holofcener, Ben Affleck, and Matt Damon, I think this is one of Scott’s better films in the last 15 years largely because the writing is so strong. That’s without mentioning that the entire cast is also excellent. I really, really enjoy Damon’s performance here. This film is proof that even in his 80s, Ridley still has his fastball.

Ridley Scott confirmed this week that an Alien: Covenant sequel is in the works. According to Scott - who is out promoting his newest film The Dog Stars - he’s still working on the third prequel film which will focus on Michael Fassbender’s android, David. In an interview with the Los Angeles Times, Scott noted that the third film is moving forward. Scott is 88 years old & still as busy as ever. It’s something I can’t fathom but that I appreciate immensely.

David O. Russell has a new film (Madden) releasing in November. Ten years ago, that would’ve been headline news & Russell’s name would be mentioned with the likes of Nolan, Denis, Ridley, Fincher & Spielberg as a top-tier director with a new film dropping in 2026. I’m here to tell you that a lot can change in a decade. In the last decade, O. Russell hasn’t come close to capturing the same level of storytelling like he did with American Hustler or here with The Silver Linings Playbook. This is, after all, the same man who directed 3 Kings. But O. Russell is nearing 70, his last few films have flopped (Amsterdam was atrocious) and he’s notoriously difficult to work with by all accounts. All of which is to suggest I don’t know if David O. Russell has a good film left in him. I hope I’m wrong - the whole point of Cinema Tweets is to embrace Cinema, not criticize it. But O. Russell is at a stage in his career where, despite everything he’s accomplished, the man has something to prove.

While 18 year-old Loyola freshman Sheridan Gorman was being laid to rest Saturday, this is what Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson was doing: Johnson said, "Here in the city of Chicago we believe in protecting every single person in this city." Well, that clearly did not apply to Sheridan Gorman, who was shot in the back and killed by murder suspect Jose Medina, an illegal alien from Venezuela who twice was released - once by the Biden Administration and once by the Cook County courts.
