Roger Deakins is the show-stealer in Sicario. I’m not sure how many other times I think of a cinematographer first when I think of a film as good as this, but the more you rewatch Sicario, the more Deakins stands out. This sequence in particular shows everything Deakins can do.

🐯: This is V of BTS. I had a really busy schedule, I finished the concert in Madrid, arrived in Paris early in the morning, and I've just finished attending the Celine show. I don’t want my 6th rewatch of The Sopranos to end but I can’t avoid it- I’m just about finished. Every time I rewatch this show, I learn or notice something new. Previous rewatches revolved around David Chase or the loaded writer’s room. Even just appreciating the entire cast top to bottom dominated my 4th rewatch. This time around? James Gandolfini is really my biggest takeaway. He was the biggest reason for this show’s success in my opinion, right above Chase. But rewatching his work again, especially as Kevin Finnerty, just baffles me. How did he do this? Where did this come from? So much of this show hinged on the performance of Tony- and Jim nailed it. And the rest is history. It’s my pick for the best television performance ever.

Hans Zimmer is responsible for scores that have shaped my perception not just of Cinema, but of life. Those include films like Gladiator, The Lion King & Inception. But nothing surpasses Interstellar. I wrote at length in December ‘24 how floored I was seeing this in IMAX after it was re-released on its 10 year anniversary. A big reason is Zimmer’s score. I just can’t think of Zimmer without thinking of Interstellar. 69 candles to a master. 🎂

Stanley Kubrick is getting the full Criterion Collection treatment: The Complete Kubrick is a 4k restoration of all Kubrick’s 13 features (all masterpieces in their own right) along with some short films & behind-the-scenes footage of Kubrick. The cost comes in at about $480, which I think is hefty, but I plan on purchasing The Complete Kubrick for multiple reasons, the primary reason being I want to have physical editions of each of Kubrick’s films in my home. Period. Drops October 20th, folks.

There’s a hole in my heart where Succession used to be. I’m strongly debating diving into Industry. I haven’t made the jump yet. But every Sunday, I’m reminded of how much I miss having a show like Succession in my life. Not sure if I’ll rewatch this or The Sopranos. I miss it.
