This is the “Bagua Formation” (the Eight Trigrams), a battlefield arrangement devised by the commander and strategist Zhuge Liang around 1,800 years ago. It is based on the principles of Bagua in Chinese philosophy, and is said to have been designed to confuse and mislead opponents within a complex maze‑like structure, making it one of the most famous military formations in Chinese tradition.
