#Dharmendra once said that “if I wanted, no one could have surpassed me.” And honestly, that feels absolutely true. If Dharmendra didn’t want it, Amitabh Bachchan wouldn’t have gotten Sholay. That was the actual level of his stardom. At that time, he had back-to-back hits, but Dharam ji never entered the rat race. He never touched producers’ feet for roles, never begged anyone for work, and never ran after awards. He became a superstar purely on talent, charm and personality. From highly acclaimed women centric cinematic gems such as Bandini, Anpadh, Purnima, Phool aur Patthar, Mamta and Anupama among others, to classics such as Satyakam, Chupke Chupke, Jeevan Mrityu and Jheel Ke Us Paar; and some of the biggest superhit blockbusters of his times, his immense talent was defined by versatility of the roles he played. While he comfortably carried the monikers of ‘Garam Dharam’ and ‘He Man’ comfortably on his shoulders, he was a proud Punjabi, a true son of the soil and a gentleman who never shied from showing his emotional side to his fans and admirers. When I was growing up I would never miss his films, and along with others of my generation admired him for his roles as an empathetic young man always supportive of the women protagonists.
