Story from our Vishnu purana Things we get to learn from our puranas A proof for “ Bhakti is Shakthi” The boy Dhruva, out of hurt humiliation and determination, rose through devotion and became immortal in the skies as Dhruva, symbol of steadfast devotion. •Dhruva was the son of King Uttānapāda and his first wife Sunīti. •The king, however, loved his younger wife Suruci more, and he often neglected Sunīti and her son. •One day, little Dhruva (just five years old) tried to sit on his father’s lap. But Suruci, out of jealousy, stopped him harshly. •She told Dhruva: “If you wish to sit on the throne, you must be born from my womb. Only then will you deserve the king’s lap.” •The words deeply hurt Dhruva, and he ran to his mother Sunīti in tears. ⸻ Mother’s Guidance •Sunīti, though sorrowful, guided Dhruva towards God. •She said: “My child, it is only by worshipping Lord Nārāyaṇa that all desires and sorrows can be removed. Seek Him, for He is the true father and protector of all.” •Inspired, Dhruva decided to leave the palace and go to the forest to meditate upon Lord Viṣṇu. ⸻ Meeting Sage Nārada •On the way, Sage Nārada met him and tried to dissuade him, saying he was too young for such austerities. •But Dhruva’s determination was unshakable: “I seek a kingdom greater than my father’s. I will not give up.” •Seeing his resolve, Nārada taught him the sacred mantra: “Om Namo Bhagavate Vāsudevāya” and instructed him in meditation and worship of Lord Viṣṇu. ⸻ Dhruva’s Tapas •Dhruva performed intense penance in Madhuvana forest on the banks of Yamunā. •He gradually reduced his intake—first fruits, then leaves, then water, then even air—until he stood motionless like a pillar, meditating only on Lord Viṣṇu. •His austerity shook the three worlds, and the gods went to Lord Viṣṇu requesting Him to appear. ⸻ Lord Viṣṇu’s Darshan •At last, Lord Viṣṇu appeared before Dhruva, radiant and holding conch, discus, mace, and lotus. •Dhruva, overwhelmed, forgot his desires. He wanted to praise the Lord but was speechless. •Lord Viṣṇu touched his cheek with His conch, giving him divine wisdom. •Dhruva then offered beautiful prayers (known as Dhruva Stuti). ⸻ Dhruva’s Boon •The Lord was pleased and asked Dhruva what he desired. •Dhruva said: “I came seeking land and kingdom, but now I desire only You, the eternal treasure.” •Still, Lord Viṣṇu blessed him: •He would rule the earth for 36,000 years with prosperity. •After his reign, he would attain a place in the heavens as the Dhruva Nakṣatra (the Pole Star), shining eternally, a guide for all beings.
