A partial government shutdown centered on the Department of Homeland Security began Saturday amid a stalemate over the Trump administration's controversial immigration enforcement policies. It's the second time in as many weeks that funding has lapsed for part of the government as Democrats and the White House remain at odds on restraints for federal immigration agents. DHS oversees Immigration and Customs Enforcement and Customs and Border Protection, whose conduct has been increasingly scrutinized since federal agents fatally shot Renee Good and Alex Pretti in Minnesota. Still, the government shutdown appears far from over as the 60-day funding measure heads to the Senate, which began a two-week recess after unanimously passing a different bill overnight following weeks of stalled negotiations. The Senate bill funds all of DHS except ICE and parts of CBP, but excludes immigration enforcement reforms demanded by Democrats after the fatal shootings of two Americans in Minnesota. House conservatives opposed the Senate legislation because it lacked funding for immigration agencies and did not include voter ID requirements. Republicans funded border security and immigration enforcement in the Working Families Tax Cut to clean up the chaos Democrats created after allowing 20 MILLION illegal aliens into our country — on purpose.
