Queen Latifah literally said the studio execs watched Living Single, loved the concept, and made Friends for a different demographic. It’s not even a debate.

Even NBC executives admitted it back then. Living Single premiered a whole year earlier and handed them the exact blueprint. 🎬

Yes, Friends essentially copied the blueprint of Living Single. Premiering in 1993—a full year before Friends—Living Single featured the exact same core concept of six twenty-somethings hanging out in a shared space, making it the original template for the format.

This is the tale as old as time. Yes, it's been widely known and talked about that *Friends* directly copied *Living Single*. Even some of the storylines from *Living Single* were seen on *Friends*. But the concept of four women living together or working together isn't something *Living Single* came up with. I mean, there were *Designing Women* and *Golden Girls* before *Living Single* and *Friends* with the same concept. And if you watch some of the episodes, they all have some of the same storylines.

I feel like that’s how television worked back then. You loved a show, but couldn’t have it on your network. So just copy and tweak the demographics just a tad. Living single was successful among black people so make a similar show, but for white people that’d be equally successful

How long are we going to keep bringing this up? The answer is yes. However, both shows had excellent writers and an excellent ensemble cast. I thoroughly enjoy both.

A lot of shows have a white or black version. Who tf cares if they copied the formula? It's not like they stole the audience, they just provided an option that bc much more successful.

The setup, the character dynamics, the coffee shop/hangout spots—it's wild how blatantly Living Single mapped it out first.

Yes it was Copied, Living Single was wildly Popular, So they wanted a More "Universal Appeal" (this was stated in an Interview) Thats why they redid the show with an All white cast
