the snow would actually insulate the roof better and keep the house warmer

That's a very interesting point...

Yes. 👏 I watched a huge Lowe’s Box Store collapse under the weight of snow in 1993. It completely flattened it.

That must have been something to see.

Insane. We got so much snow that day. I was in Virginia across the street from the Lowe’s in Christiansburg. The store’s roof fully collapsed on March 13 under 20–24 inches of snow. It was closed, so no one was injured, but it buried inventory and led to weeks of repairs.

Yes for structural inegrity n No, as an ice barrier can be a good insulator like an Eskimo igloo... 🤔

In Norway, we use snowcatchers on the roof to PREVENT the snow from moving. These are small fences on the roof. The roof can take a lot of weight, for a modern roof the volume is not a problem. But the movement of the snow can ruin the entire house.

doesn't matter about the need to be done, this looks so cool!

Yes, because the weight of the snow makes the roofs collapse. That’s why they do it.

It can't be overstated how much I don't miss having to shovel snow off a roof, or a jobsite. Nothing like showing up to your site, only to shovel for 5 hours in freezing temps so you can work for the next 3 days, till another snowstorm hits. Love my 🌴🌴!...

@its_The_Dr I used to do that at my upstate NY house after heavy snow. It saves the roof.

Snow can be helpful insulating a structure, provided there isn't much heat escapement that can lead to ice dams and leaks. That said, it can also take a building down if too much accumulates, or it rains on snowpack and the load goes beyond the engineered max static psf.

I dont think I would survive in places like these. How cold does it even get in some of these places? I complain when it's between 10 - 15 degrees outside. I would not get out of bed in such weathers.

Often, yes. Roofs can’t hold infinite weight of snow.

Dorothy Skala's profile picture
Dorothy Skala1 year ago

yes because the weight could destroy the roof and the roof collapse

Peter's profile picture

You have to shovel the snow off the roof to much weight. Also a good rule of thumb if you have to stand on the roof. Remove two to three times your own weight. Before standing on the roof.
