A Led Zeppelin classic in all aspects, a story for you to see how a great song was created. Origins of The Rain Song, The Rain Song is a ballad of over seven minutes in length. Guitarist Jimmy Page originally constructed the melody of this song at his home in Plumpton, England, where he had recently installed a studio mixing console. With a working title of "Slush", a reference to its easy listening simulated orchestral arrangement, Page was able to bring in a completed arrangement of the melody, for which singer Robert Plant wrote the words. Plant ranks his vocal performance on the track as one of his best. The song also features a Mellotron played by John Paul Jones to add to the orchestral effect, while Page plays a Danelectro guitar. Page wrote "The Rain Song" in response to George Harrison complaining to Led Zeppelin drummer John Bonham that the group were unable to write ballads. In Light and Shade: Conversations with Jimmy Page, biographer Brad Tolinski quotes Page's recollection: George was talking to Bonzo one evening and said, "The problem with you guys is that you never do ballads." I said, "I'll give him a ballad," and I wrote "Rain Song," which appears on Houses of the Holy. In fact, you'll notice I even quote "Something" in the song's first two chords. 'When The Leeve Breaks', a song originally recorded and written by Kansas Joe McCoy and Memphis Minnie in 1929 and it's about the Great Mississippi Flood of 1927. The song was later covered by the British rock band Led Zeppelin for their 4th studio album, known as Led Zeppelin IV. The band brought a fresh air to the song with their approach, Bonham's drums, Page's heavy-driven electric boxes, John Paul Jones' unique bass lines, and Plant's unmatched vocals. It quickly became a fan favourite song. Then, in 1994, as you may know, Led Zeppelin was already a broke-up band, and Jimmy Page and Robert Plant released their live album "No Quarter Unledded". In this live album, they recorded some of the Led Zep songs and When The Leeve Breaks is one of them. Origins of Rock and Roll, by the almighty Led Zeppelin, According to guitarist Jimmy Page, 'Rock and Roll' developed from a spontaneous jam session that occurred after the band became frustrated while attempting to finish recording "Four Sticks" at the Headley Grange mansion they had rented in Hampshire, England. During a break, John Bonham began playing the drum intro to the 1957 song "Keep A-Knockin'" by Little Richard, to which Page added a Chuck Berry-style guitar riff. The rest of the band members reportedly joined in "one by one." Ian Stewart was also present at the session performing piano. Realizing the potential in the new idea, the band immediately put "Four Sticks" on the "back burner." The tapes were rolling, and after improvising the first section of the song, the basis of the rest of the song was completed in around fifteen minutes. Robert Plant wrote the lyrics, which were a response to critics who claimed their previous album, Led Zeppelin III, wasn't really rock and roll. Led Zeppelin III had more of an acoustic folk sound, and Plant wanted to prove they could still rock out. "We just thought rock and roll needed to be taken on again," he told Creem in 1988. "I was finally in a really successful band, and we felt it was time for actually kicking ass. It wasn't an intellectual thing, 'cause we didn't have time for that - we just wanted to let it all come flooding out. It was a very animal thing, a hellishly powerful thing, what we were doing." Initially, the band called the song "It's Been a Long Time'' but they eventually decided on 'Rock and Roll' which sounds way better and defines the genre with the song itself.
