He's showing you the proper technique, and he got the water to drain. So yes, he's doing the right thing. It's a good video to highlight how he used the plunger. You don't "push", you create a seal and then "pop" it back. That "pop back" is what breaks the clog.

A little plunger action is definitely NOT why you would call a plumber. You can buy one of those for 5 bucks, and do this yourself. Also, it's advisable to regularly put some drain cleaner down the pipes, just to keep it all smooth and clean. This will prevent buildup.
