That book is already being written. And if I spoke to your teachers, your friends, your parents, I would know whether you are trusted, how hard you work, and whether you are ethical I would know so much about you that you would be shocked. I dont even have to meet you So that book is already growing. You write the book the way you want it to be written. You actually have that choice. Do not let others write it."

I recently visited the remote town of Stehekin to see flood damage firsthand and hear from impacted residents at a community meeting. The only way to get to Stehekin is via boat, plane, or on foot. My son Jack and I decided to hike in on the Chelan Lakeshore Trail. Here are some highlights from our 18-mile backpacking trip. Some things you should know if you're interested in doing the hike: The trail starts at Prince Creek, which is only accessible by boat. You can take a ferry from Chelan or Field’s Point Landing. Despite the trail name, you’re not down by the lake the whole hike and there is a lot of climbing and descending. Be prepared for a net elevation gain of about 4,000 feet. Be prepared for heat — the trail gets a lot of sun exposure. Make sure you bring plenty of water, sunscreen and cool layers to help keep you from overheating. There are sections that are quite brushy. Enjoy your time out there and make sure you give yourself time to explore Stehekin before taking the ferry back to Chelan. The bakery is incredible.

Imperial Japan was a fanatical regime that basically spread their fanaticism throughout the entire population. Friends, in our first reading from the book of Deuteronomy this week, Moses says to the people, “For this command that I enjoin on you today is not too mysterious and remote for you. . . . No, it is something very near to you, already in your mouths and in your hearts; you have only to carry it out.” This is a master text for what we call in the Catholic tradition “the natural law.” It means that there is within us a kind of deep moral intuition by which we know the right thing to do; there are intuitions of value that give us a sense of meaning, purpose, and direction in life.
