Yoshi’s Island: Super Mario World 2 Super Nintendo Nintendo (1995) Did you know: The visual design in Yoshi’s Island was initially rejected by Nintendo’s marketing team who said it lacked punch compared to Donkey Kong Country‘s trend-setting CG visuals. As it was too late to switch styles, newly hired artist Hisashi Nogami doubled down on the crayon “storybook” aesthetic as a creative fight back. While the graphics were eventually all hand-drawn and scanned, as a compromise Nogami created the intro/ending cutscenes in a pre-rendered style.
