Metal Slug 6 was released during the series’ 10th anniversary year. It was also the first Metal Slug game to move beyond the Neo Geo platform and launch on the Atomiswave system. Since it came out during a period when the arcade market was already in decline, not many people seem to remember this title today. While the graphics did improve with the platform change, it doesn’t quite capture the finely crafted pixel art style that made Metal Slug 2 and 3 so memorable. In particular, the high-resolution backgrounds can feel a bit awkward because they don’t always blend naturally with the lower-resolution character sprites. The game also introduced Clark and Ralf as playable characters, along with unique special abilities for each character. A new weapon switching system was added as well, allowing players to carry and swap between two weapons. Another feature I thought was a good idea was Easy Mode, where you start with a Heavy Machine Gun by default, although you can’t access the Final Mission. When you defeat the white wolf, it drops an orb. When you collect it, you hear the famous “Power up!” voice and the main character starts becoming more muscular. After the third power-up, he finally transforms into a beast, gaining incredible strength. That transformation is really the core of the game. Another fun part is that each stage lets you transform into different beasts like a werewolf, dragon, tiger, or bear. I had a lot of fun playing it in arcades back then. Later it was ported to the Mega Drive and also to the Famicom. But the Famicom version was a bit disappointing compared to what I expected. For some reason, though, it lacked the level of polish seen in Sega’s other titles and failed to gain widespread popularity. However, the Saturn version of the game was well made compared to other ports and was received quite positively.
