They love criticising Pauline Hanson for wanting to ban the Burqa. But look at those ISIS brides arriving in them. If we had such a policy in place it would have solved half our problems. Hanson is spot on - ‘If you ban the burqa that will stop these people of mindset who wear the burqa, that control their women … they will not come to Australia.’ This is the type of strong, common sense leadership we need right now.

But I don’t know why left wing politicians feel a need to instinctually LEAP to the defence of the burqa. Neither Mehreen Faruqi or Fatima Payman wear the burqa. Yet they apparently feel like criticism of the burqa is an attack on them individually. It’s bizarre. At least 16 Muslim-majority countries have banned the burqa or niqab in some form because it is seen as so extreme. The burqa is extremely repressive and brutal towards women. The reason that hardcore Islamic fundamentalists enforce it on women is because they want to keep women as second class citizens. They want to completely segregate them and cut them off from society. Human beings are social creatures and our sociability depends on countless subtle gestures and facial expressions. The burqa completely cuts that away, robbing women of the ability to partake in the most basic forms of communication. So it makes no sense to defend the burqa from a leftist position.
