ROSALÍA talks about what it was like to learn 13 languages to sing the songs on her new album “LUX”. “I speak a little Catalan because it’s my mother tongue. I speak a little Spanish and barely any English, but, you know… I love learning. I love learning things. So I wanted to learn different languages for a long time. I’ve been practicing on Duolingo, you know. But sometimes I’m like, ‘I need to do more.’ So while I was trying to figure out what the concept would be, because I was curious about learning from other cultures and how spirituality can be understood in many different places around the world in different ways, I was learning about different saints from all over the world. And I was reading, reading, reading so many hagiographies, hagiographies. Then I thought, ‘OK, let me put a map on the wall.’ Let me pin different stories, different women from around the world. And if I was making a song inspired by Joan of Arc, then I would do it in French. So depending on the story I wanted to reference, I would use one language or another. And then I would write about 20 different verse options and send them to a translator, a proper translator, get them back, tweak things, record, and then send them to people who would correct the pronunciation, all of it.”

Shadey is one of the Amhara’s great intangible heritages celebrated in the last weeks of August each year. The festivity has different names in different parts of Amhara: in Raya Amahra (Solel), waghimra Amhara (Shadey), lasta lalibela (Ashendiye) Very recently, as early as ten years, the tigray people have tried to adopt this colorful culture through the help of the anti-Amhara woyanie regime and its corrupt institutions. Anthropologists argued that a cultural identity theft is harmful to the owning community and is claimed to be a violation of the collective intellectual property rights of the originating culture. However, Woyanie is adopted the Ashenda culture in a colonial manner where elements of this culture are copied and being misused and reduced to an exotic street festival outside of the context and against the expressly stated wishes of the owners of the culture, the Amharas. This misappropriating of Shadey is a disrespectful to the Amhara culture and its values. Someone takes something from your culture and uses it for their own benefit without no consequences is inappropriate and unacceptable. What’s more, ridicules is you cannot ask the UNESCO to inscribe the imitated culture on its world heritage list as your own property while still we the originating people are alive. This is an outright theft of a cultural identity. Even though we can argue that culture could be adopted or borrowed, requesting for intellectual property as your own heritage is no less than a cultural genocide and/or colonization. The tigreans tried intentionally distorted the meaning of the culture and using it without considering the socio-historical and religious circumstances and significance of these cultural forms so as not perpetuate the already existing majority and widely celebrated shadey among the Amhara community. The famous cultural theorist George Lipisitz called this “strategic anti essentialism” to refer to the calculated use of a cultural form, outside of your own, to define yourself or your group. #Ashendiye_shadey_Solel_2023 #AshendiyeAmhara2024

If you think it’s hard, then it’s hard. But if you don’t, then it isn’t. Of course there’re exhausting days and easier ones, but if you genuinely enjoy what you do, you’ll always find a way to get through it. Everyone’s journey is different tho. I’m really grateful that this time I have my own team working alongside me, helping with the planning, production, and bringing everything together. They’re people I trust, and they’ve been such a big part of this new chapter. The biggest adjustment has been moving from one system I’m used to into a different one. Now it’s really about figuring out how to adapt and make our own system work.

The example I like is this: your left eye basically tells your brain that your nose is on the right; your right eye tells your brain your nose is on the left. It’s not like one eye is going to win that contest. You basically fuse in your brain the different information that’s slightly conflicting, but that actually gives you a global picture of the scene in front of you. Safety is a lot about redundancy. Safety really comes from taking different sources of information, never entirely trusting them 100%, and merging the evidence based on the different hints of information you get. The more information you add that comes from different sources, the more you improve the overall estimate of your belief.
