Closest thing to autotune back then was that weird voice mouth tube thing. A "talk box" I think it was called. Paired with a synthesizer I think. Not the same, but was neater I feel. You can hear it a minute into this song.

Apparently, before autotune, there were no effects or playback. Back in the day, producing a rap album took 20 engineers. Now, a single engineer can do 20 in a day.
