I LOVE the fact that Andrew called her a feminist girlboss to her face because that’s exactly what she is. Candace keeps hiding behind this idea that it’s ok for her to be a mother of young children who doesn’t have to work but chooses to because she didn’t lose her husband. Even if we accept that standard, it still doesn’t make her not a feminist; the end result is the same—a mother choosing to spend time on her career when she could be spending it with her young children and family. But more to the point: Candace’s obfuscation would only be legitimate IF her own children are never with ANYONE ELSE besides her or her husband. Nobody else. No nannies, no babysitters, no grandparents or aunts or uncles or extended family members watching the kids. Otherwise, she has no leg to stand on to criticize Erika for not having a parent with her children at all times. The fact that Candace still has her husband makes no difference if her kids are still with nannies—just like Erika’s. Plus, we still have no idea how much Erika actually works and is away from her kids and how much she delegates. People are just pretending like they know she’s working forty hours a week outside the home. And I’ll remind everyone—Coretta King went into “the office” for her husband four days after her assassination. She started filling in for him at previously scheduled events right away. It’s not uncommon for the widows of assassinated political figures; these women are few and far between and in a class all their own separate from widows not related to political assassinations.
