From what I see you can either do lower ceiling to match up. Or you can put a faux cover over it and use it as an accent. I realize the symmetry of the room feels off with that beam there.

The symmetry is definitely off. My other thought was to add a faux beam to the other side to match. The ceilings are 9', but I imagine I would lose 2-4 inches to hide it. The room has a header separating it from the kitchen, so that is an option. My main concern is the builder should have used a different beam. Is it possible to have a flush mount beam on a first floor?
