Just to make things more complicated, the video is flipped.

Interesting take. But I don’t believe that the settlers of the old west set out without having any knives. How would they skin game that they hunted without having any knives. I’d assume they’d still use their hunting knives at meals if they didn’t have any others.

Even more interesting is, this is a well known tell for spies or people on intelligence. Famous example during WW2, Germans in particular were breaking into allied lines pretending to be Americans. Many were very convincing, Americans did the same. This was used as a tell.

The Greeks explained theirs right in the name. Dinner — deipnon — ended before the real event began: the symposion, literally "drinking together." Couches facing inward, a master of ceremonies setting the pace, conversation as the entertainment. Plato set a masterpiece at one.

Perhaps Americans noticed that a form was designed to be imbedded into food before taking a bite. It also could have been that we noticed a fork has a distinct spoon-like curve that cradles food instead of balancing food on the back.

They spared a very decisive half a kilo of weight by not carrying knives. What utter bullshit.

Marking unusually quiet periods in my journal helps me give later moves a clearer starting point. Small detail, useful context.

European settlers who drove wagons across North America were not Europes best. They were mostly uneducated buffoons desperate for free land. I’m not sure MOST Americans eat this way anymore.
