Goodfellas is adapted from the book Wiseguy by Nicholas Pileggi, which tells the true story of Henry Hill, a former mobster who became an FBI informant. Several characters in the film are based on real people, including Paulie Cicero (based on Paul Vario) and Jimmy Conway (based on James Burke). Scorsese decided not to rehearse the film's scenes in order to capture a more authentic and spontaneous performance from the cast.
