It was December of 1980 when Dire Straits took the stage live at Rockpop but it was a night that was dedicated to John Lennon. Only 11 days before this concert, John Lennon was shot by a fan and we lost the legend that day. Mark Knopfler dedicated 'News' to the memory of John Lennon, performing along with his band at Rockpop. Dire Straits performing 'News' at Rockpop in Concert in December 1980.

This band you'll watch came out of nowhere in a day of the year 1978 when they released their debut album they called Dire Straits. The album seemed unsuccessful at first glance until the song 'Sultans of Swing' became a hit in Netherlands. Then the story was re-written. They called themselves Dire Straits as they were in a desperate situation financially. That name now is an indelible mark of rock music. Not me, not you, not them, none of us can ignore Dire Straits anymore. After their debut album's huge success, they started to perform at different venues. The song 'Sultans of Swing' was already a completely different tune and on the other hand, album's other songs like 'Wild West End' and 'Six Blade Knife' showed the prosperity of the band.
