What do they do exactly, I mean the position

Photography, sometimes called shooting but most commonly referred to as compositing, is the process of bringing all the elements of the animation together (the 2d layers, the cgi, etc,) and make it look seamless. Perhaps more importantly, they also add lighting, effects, textures, etc, and might make small edits to the animation as well. In layman's terms, a DoP's role is to make the final product look pretty.
