Through Technology, a Centuries-Old Battle Is Coming to a Head "A Discussion of Open-Source AI with Travis Oliphant" Travis Oliphant Travis Oliphant is an entrepreneur and CEO and co founder of OpenTeams (OpenTeams®), a company that “helps organizations deploy, support, and own [AI] technology at enterprise scale.” One of their tag lines is “Connecting Companies with Communities.” As a data scientist and software developer, Travis is known for his contributions to Python and as the creator of NumPy and a founding contributor to SciPy, which together formed a foundation for modern AI and machine learning. When I was in Salt Lake City in the first week of June, Travis and I went into a studio to record this interview, continuing a conversation we had started when Travis and his team visited the Solari team in the Netherlands in early 2026. Our discussion focuses on how we can understand and manage the growing presence of AI in our lives. Travis has an impressive intellectual and entrepreneurial background. After earning Bachelor and Master of Science degrees in mathematics and electrical engineering at Brigham Young University, he completed a PhD in biomedical engineering at the Mayo Clinic. As an assistant professor at Brigham Young’s Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering from 2001 to 2007, he directed the Biomedical Imaging Lab, where his research centered on computational imaging techniques. He then went on to start several companies, each time identifying the need for a new standard, building the open-source infrastructure, and helping enterprises adopt it at scale. Brilliant, open-minded, deeply caring, and generous, Travis is someone who can help us understand what is happening and what we do about it. My hope is this will be the first of many conversations as we navigate the acceleration in technological innovation (and skullduggery) and seek to ensure that tools such as AI serve the health and prosperity of a human civilization. Peter Thiel on how to identify great talent Peter Thiel is famous for discovering undervalued talent throughout his career. The most well-known example is PayPal, where he recruited people who went on to start companies like YouTube, LinkedIn, Yelp, Affirm, and Yammer. But he also recruited Alex Karp, his former classmate at Stanford Law School, to co-found Palantir with him 2003. Tyler Cowen asks Thiel what traits he looks for in undiscovered talent that everyone else overlooks. Thiel replies: “It’s very difficult to reduce it to any single trait. A lot of what you’re looking for are these almost zen-like opposites.” He gives a few examples: “You want people who are both really stubborn and really open-minded. That’s a little contradictory. You want people who are sort of really idiosyncratic and really different, but then who can work well together in teams… If you focus too much on one end of it, you tend to get it completely wrong… [I like to look for] these combinations of unusual traits.” Essentially he looks for idiosyncratic people with combinations of unusual traits that counterbalance those idiosyncrasies. Obviously, there’s a lot of people that work for AEW that came through GCW, so they can vouch for us and vouch for me in terms of how things are handled and just assuring him, ‘Hey, this is cool, in a space where you otherwise might not know.’ So in terms of having Hook come aboard it was a combination of, I think, he’s ready to get out there and do some more and gain some experience, and he has people telling him, ‘Listen, if you want to do that, go to GCW.’ That’s how the connection was made. It really wasn’t that difficult, just a handful of text messages and he’s down. He’s cool, he’s down. That’s where we’re at. He just wrestled Joey this past Friday in Cincinnati, which is an A town by the way, if you didn’t know and he did great.”

I am privileged to be invited as an observer to the Spier Dialogue 2026 in Cape Town, South Africa, a gathering that has brought together respected leaders, policymakers, diplomats, entrepreneurs, and change makers from across Africa and the world to discuss the future of democracy, governance, leadership, urbanisation, and economic transformation on our continent. This opportunity was made possible through the kind facilitation and connection of Mr. Peter Obi, whose commitment to fostering meaningful dialogue and engagement across African leadership spaces continues to open doors for constructive exchange and shared learning. As someone who contested for the position of Chairman of AMAC in the last election, this experience has been deeply enriching, particularly as I had meaningful engagements and listened to Mr. George Hill-Lewis, the Mayor of Cape Town and Leader of the South AfricanDemocratic Alliance, on city building, sustainable urban development, and how African cities can be transformed through visionary leadership, proper planning, and focused oriented governance. These are exactly the ideas and reforms I envisioned for AMAC and Abuja, creating functional communities, improving infrastructure, ensuring environmental sustainability, empowering young people, and building cities that truly work for the people. I also had the privilege of exchanging ideas with Mr. Venancio Mondlane, the leadership of ANAMOLA, the Mayor of Mozambique, and several other distinguished African leaders and thinkers on governance, economic productivity, institutional reforms, and the urgent need for Africa to invest more in its people, especially the youth. One thing remains clear, Africa has enormous potential, but realizing that potential requires competent, accountable, and compassionate leadership committed to service rather than personal interests. The conversations here in Cape Town further strengthen my belief that transformational leadership and intentional city development are critical to building the Africa we all desire. What a time to be alive! We are entering the era of machines that discover and build. Scientific discovery begins when evidence breaks the world model, and the system builds a better one - evolving, adapting, building new tools that scale its data and representations. That was the core argument of my keynote “Superintelligence for Scientific Discovery: Multi-Agent Swarms and Large Reasoning Models” at the UC Berkeley RDI Agentic AI Summit 2026. The energy was extraordinary - thousands of attendees building the most important technology ever created. Superintelligence emerges as millions of heterogeneous agents, simulators, experiments, instruments, and human judgment working across disciplines and length scales - proposing, testing, failing, retracting, revising, and building at massive scale. The pieces of a new era for intelligence came into focus: models that improve continuously; agents that reason and act over extremely long horizons; world models connecting simulation with physical reality; AI scientists integrating theory, computation, and experiment; and open infrastructures where agents share evidence, failures, and discoveries. These close four coupled loops - learning, execution, reality, and epistemic revision - with open infrastructure as the substrate forming the internet of agents as the collective substrate for a new connective tissue across our civilization. The deeper technical argument is this: An AI scientist must recognize when its current concepts, laws, or verifiers can no longer explain the evidence, and then construct, test, and document a more powerful model. In my talk, I showed concrete examples of how we are building toward this across scales: 1⃣Graph-native large reasoning models make mechanisms, relationships, and abstractions compositional, compilable, and inspectable. 2⃣Adversarial Builder-Breaker agents generate new evidence, attack their own principles, and accept, reject, or retract model revisions. 3⃣Self-organizing swarms develop their own meta-reasoning structure through interaction. ScienceClaw × Infinite (arXiv:2603.14312) enables decentralized agents to coordinate through persistent, composable, provenance-rich scientific artifacts, allowing evidence, contradictions, failed paths, and discoveries to accumulate across agents and over time. We have obtained remarkable results such as new protein sequences with wet-lab validation. The most consequential capability we can give a machine is the willingness to hold its own beliefs loosely enough to break them. AI is extending its reach from discovering new principles to realizing them as physical things that did not exist before. 🙏GRATEFUL🙏 The journey I started back in 2022 with just a concept has matured into Rwanda's most popular weekly podcast, 'The Long Form'. The conversation's that I've had are my attempt to better inform Rwandans, friends of Rwanda, East Africans and Africans as a whole about the Rwanda (and world) they live in. To survive and thrive in these times, information is key. This is my view The dream of a united Africa cannot come to pass unless we talk to each other and learn from each other's experience. That is why over the last two years, I've travelled to Uganda and Kenya to speak with though leaders, journalists, artists and politicians. We CANNOT wait for foreign voices to define how we see each other as Africans. Unfortunately, since independence, Africans have only seen, and heard, from each other through the lenses of the BBC, CNN, CCTV, Al Jazeera and Deutsche Welle. SABC's attempt to create a Pan-African news organisation sadly came to nought. Why? Because it was too expensive! Only external media could afford to pay foreign correspondent, buy expensive camera and operate global satellite systems. But that isnt the case today. With two microphones, a mixer, three cameras, two lights and editing software, you can create content that used to be the preserve of major media. And with Youtube, you can literally reach billions of people globally. You just need content and an internet connection. Partnership is Key! One of the things that I've learnt living in Rwanda and working alongside other Rwandans to build the country, is the power of collaboration. You go much further when you work with like-minded partners. That is why I've chosen to partner with Next Media. Next Media created the AfroMobile app, a one-stop space for live television, radio and podcasts. All geared towards the African audience. On it you shall find East African tv channels like NBS TV, Rwanda TV and K24. You shall also be able to enjoy live radio and exclusive music content. And you shall find The Form Podcast! "SC/ST, please excuse." The phrase once appeared on a major matrimonial site… and caused massive outrage. The company was forced to apologize and start filtering such profiles. But as a matchmaker with 15+ years of experience, here's my simple take: I would have argued strongly for letting it remain visible. Why? Because, as the saying goes, "When someone shows you who they are, believe them." Just as with "Brokers, please excuse" in real-estate ads, or the old colonial country-club signs that supposedly read "Dogs and Indians not allowed," open prejudice—however distasteful—gives you information. Transparency > hidden bias. I'd rather know upfront that someone is narrow-minded or holds offensive preferences than discover it six months into conversations or a relationship. Important clarification: This is about the deeply personal realm of choosing a life partner—not housing, employment, or public services, which must remain governed by law and basic decency. Preferences in matrimony are not the same as discrimination in tenancy or jobs. Preferences are personal. Full stop. That is exactly why, when working with our valued clients at Jodi365, we invite them to share their preferences openly and candidly. I respect them—even as I sometimes challenge and push back on the ones I believe are limiting or unfair. Outright bigotry does exist in this world. We can't wish it away.
