40 Years ago Barbara Morgan watched as Challenger lifted off with a crew she'd got to know well. She was the backup for the teacher in space program. We all know what happened to the shuttle, and it's understandable that many people would see this and never want to fly on it. Barbara returned to teaching but would be offered another opportunity to become an astronaut in 1998, she was still working as an elementary school teacher at that time. She trained again and was expected to fly on STS-118, assigned to Columbia, while preparing for this flight she would be on a jet that was supposed to meet Columbia after it returned from space. Again she had a front row seat to a shuttle disaster. She was undeterred and would ultimately fly to the ISS on Endeavour in 2007, leading lessons from space. We all hear about fearless test pilots, but less about fearless elementary school teachers.

This man’s daughter is graduating high school and they are so proud to hear her name called. However minutes before she was supposed to go on stage, she was escorted back by a police officer because the school staff won’t let her wear her Lei. The family is from Hawaii and they feel it’s a part of to wit culture and don’t see why a ring of flowers could be offensive. If other people are allowed to wear things that represent their own culture or religion, shouldn’t this be allowed as well? If this was your daughter and they told her she couldn’t walk because of her flowers, would you make her take it off?

The other teachers saw what she did and they all started laughing at her hysterically as she tried to explain what happened and that she was making a u-turn. She was upset because the other teachers were questioning her maturity and experience because of how young she is. So what did she do? This teacher says if you ever wonder why people are leaving the teaching profession in droves, this is one of the main reasons. She has students that she has written an incident report on every single day. She has contacted the principal and the support staff and the help that was given to her was to email the parents of the students. Basically, no help or support at all. We have many epidemics in our country but this is one of the biggest that doesn’t get enough attention. We all know our school system is a failure but even more than we know. Students these days have zero consequences. They are passed with straight F’s. They are allowed to be a continuing distraction and disruption in the classrooms and nothing is done about it. We need to start over. 💯 Why do we allow this this as a school? As a district? As a city? As a state? As a country? It didn’t use to be like this? This is why other countries surpass us in education, there is no discipline in our schools. Would you want to be a teacher in this day and age at a public school?
