Backpropagation by hand ✍️ ~ 11 steps walkthrough below Backpropagation is the algorithm that actually trains a neural network, and it is where most people stop following along. It is not calculus you cannot do. It is matrix multiplication, working backward, one layer at a time. So I drew and calculated one entirely by hand. Goal: push the loss gradient back through a 3-layer network and land on a new value for every weight and bias. = 1. Given = A 3-layer perceptron, an input X, predictions Ypred = [0.5, 0.5, 0], and the truth Ytarget = [0, 1, 0]. = 2. Backprop gradient cells = Let us draw empty cells for every gradient we are about to compute. The shape of the answer comes first. = 3. Layer 3 softmax = We get dL/dz3 straight from Ypred minus Ytarget = [0.5, -0.5, 0]. No chain rule needed, and that shortcut is the whole reason softmax and cross-entropy are paired. = 4. My cousins and my brother and I were exploring Coney Island, we saw the sights, hung out at the arcades and before we went back to the apartment we decided to go and get something to eat, we had some money on us but not much so we decided to see what we could get at one of the vendors. This was back in the early 90’s when most of them had dollar slices of pizza wherever we went. So we got 4 pieces of pizza, should have been $4 because that’s the price we were used to. The guy wanted to charge us $24 at $6 a slice. We argues with him because one of my cousins already took a bite being so hungry. But at the least we owed $4. We gave the other slices back and refused them but had to pay for the partially eaten one, it was embarrassing that an adult would try that on a bunch of kids. We told our uncle what happened and he went back and yelled at the vendor. He was familiar with them because he used to get slices all the time from the same guy and he never charged my uncle that price. I couldn’t imagine paying that exurban amount, like this guy who was being charged $54 for a hotdog by one of the vendors. At first he thought it was a typo and it was $5.40 but the vendor. Learned it up when he said no it was $54. Would you have paid that amount? I would have walked away, clearly he was trying to possibly scam a the man for looking like a tourist. Part of the experience when visiting a new area is the street food but it’s becoming more and more a chore avoiding places like this.

This man noticed cans of the same brand piling up in his yard so he set up a ring camera and noticed the same vehicle passing by and throwing these cans over and over again but he needed a closer angle so he could get an accurate description of the vehicle so he set up a GoPro, when he finally got the information he needed he tracked the guy down and had an honest conversation with the man and found out he was doing it because of his Trump flag, he went on to explain to the gentleman the ways in which they were more alike than different and gave him an out, if he apologized to him and his family and promised not to do it again to which the man obliged. Too many times we see these situations culminate in violence and that’s exactly what those that propagate this hatred want, it is refreshing to see someone flip the script and handle it like a MAN. These young ladies thought it would be fun to walk around in the middle of the night, they wound up at the park were just hanging out on the swings, chatting amongst themselves. Then they heard people surround them with guns drawn, ordering them onto the ground. The people yelling and screaming don’t sound like police but they were too scared to tell. Should they have just ran for it, what’s the worst that could happen? While living in NC, my cousin and I were so bored all the time especially at night, this was before the N64 came out from Nintendo. So at night we would steal a few beers from the fridge and would walk around the middle of the night sipping some beers and seeing where we end up. While out this night we saw the same old Chevy truck keep driving by. In the third pass they started yelling aggressively and one waved a rifle that was sitting in the trunk bed. We figured it was just a few drunk locals with nothing better to do. So we ended up deciding we needed to walk back home. We saw them again and we were close to a gas station so I decided we should run to the gas station in case these guys try to get cute. They ended up going to the gas station too, we were nervous because we thought they were coming in for us. But one of them grabbed some sodas and a Slim Jim and they left. Sometimes people do things like this just for fun, they think it’s funny to try to freak people out, I have a feeling these girls were just a victim of a few bored teenagers and weren’t in any real danger.

This is why I never go camping alone in some creepy and reportedly haunted woods. In a place where locals go to perform their own rituals and believe they are something they aren’t is not a place to go camping under the stars and roast marshmallows around a fire. I would save that for another time. For my take on this I wouldn’t even know where to start. I couldn’t imagine going campaigning with friends only for a woman who thinks she’s a witch to start running around the car and onto the car trying to scare me away because to her this is some sacred place. When we were kids we always went to a place called the Yogi Bear campground. It was more of a resort, it was named after a famous cartoon character. My family went and allowed us to each bring a friend. In the days we would explore the woods and go swimming at the pool, hit up the concessions. But at night while everyone slept, we were young and dumb. A friend had brought an ouija board and we were trying to open portals and contact spirits. One night in the tent when we did that, it was around 4am, we heard someone walking around the tent while we were using the board. We were all around 11-12 years old, we were terrified. I remember my friend telling me to open the tent and see what’s there but I didn’t. I just sat there and we waited it out. Looking back at this moment, and I use this moment in my own mind not to ever get an ouija board. I think it could have just been other campers who were walking by and it just happened around the same time. But I will never forget that day for obvious reasons.

A few weeks ago Tina from Galgos del Sol got in touch to ask if we could offer back-up sanctuary space to a poor disabled boy who was in the pererra. She couldn’t bear to leave him there and promised to sort his medical needs, but couldn’t be sure he would be rehomeable. On seeing his walk to freedom we said yes. They called him Chaplin. A brave young boy who has been so let down by humans, his deformities are down to being kept in the dark and a poor diet, similar to children getting rickets. His life changed overnight when he arrived at their shelter and he has since had the best possible care, seen the best vets in Spain, had an operation to have one leg straightened and got stronger by the day. But his healthcare is a longterm plan and that is why Tina felt he needed sanctuary space, at least for now. Chaplin arrives with us tomorrow and we just can’t wait to meet him. A woman after Em’s heart Tina does so much for the pound dogs in Spain who live in terrible conditions, often with their medical needs left untreated. We are proud to be working along side Galgos del Sol and Chaplin has a bright future thanks to two rescues working together 💜

A woman after Em’s heart Tina does so much for the pound dogs in Spain who live in terrible conditions, often with their medical needs left untreated. You notice how .. May in fact has been very average if not cooler than average - all month.....and yet the climate hysterics focus on the one hot day which has now passed already Records? I don't think so .. we've had the same temp many times before . And that was without the Met office fiddling figures ... There's a reason Lidos were once so prolific in the U.K. and one of the most popular things to do in the 20s and 30s Perhaps if the Met didn't use once lone weather stations which are now surrounded by buildings... or went back to using air source rather than ground ... or take temps at runways or near solar fields... The temps would in fact not be anywhere record breaking. Especially if you go back centuries And again if we had cheap energy we could warm and cool our homes as needed and no hysteria would be needed and we could focus instead on cleaning up our rivers and seas and green spaces which ARE in need of help. Warm is good Enjoy

I first met Saud Abdulhamid on my very first trip to Riyadh. Saudi Arabia. I had gone there to see Odion Ighalo, back when he was still playing for Al Hilal. That day, I was standing outside the training ground, just waiting, taking everything in. Then suddenly, a beautiful white G-Wagon pulled up. The windows were fully tinted, so you couldn’t see who was inside. For a moment, I was convinced it had to be Ighalo. As the window rolled down, I got ready to greet him—only to be met by Saud, flashing his trademark smile. He waved at me, and I waved back, even though, truthfully, I had no idea who he was at the time. Not long after, Ighalo arrived, and we headed into the training ground. That’s when I properly met Saud, along with his brother. We had a brief chat before training started, and that was the beginning. Our paths crossed again when Saudi Arabia played Nigeria in a friendly match in Portugal. After the game, in the middle of the crowd, I heard someone shout, “Ighalo!”—it was Saud. From there, we stayed connected, following each other online, keeping in touch in our own way. Then came another reunion, this time in Lens, inside his small but tastefully furnished apartment in the heart of the city. Back then, things were still uncertain for him. He wasn’t playing regularly, but I remember him telling me clearly that he wanted to stay in Europe, stay with Lens, and fight for his place. There was a quiet determination about him. I could feel it. And today, looking at his journey, that belief has paid off. He has grown into an important player for the club, playing his part in helping them secure a Champions League spot. He’s become one of Saudi Arabia’s biggest ambassadors in Europe. And life keeps moving forward. He just got married too. Big congratulations to you, my brother.
