UVIRA Update: Technically, the city has been locked from all entries and the remaining exit is as usual the water way to Burundi. The fight against infectious disease has been one of the most important driving forces in human evolution. So you might expect that evolution has optimised our immune system, and there won't be much low-hanging fruit for improving this with science. But bacteria and viruses evolve so quickly that evolution is constantly racing just to keep up. It doesn't have time to optimise perfectly. Case in point: Our primate ancestors used to have built-in genetic defence against HIV-like viruses. But at some point, the gene was repurposed to protect against a different virus that posed more of a threat. That virus has since disappeared, but our genome is still protecting against it - and failing to protect us against HIV. The good news is that we should expect there to be many opportunities where science can do better than evolution.

The hardest of decisions has been made. Tomorrow afternoon, our vet, who has been with us every step of this journey, will come to our home and help Ralph cross. Despite eating copious amounts of food, he lost 500kg in 3 weeks, down from 3kg to 2.5kg. His temperature is too low as he is too weak to regulate his body and he is showing signs of muscle weakness. Although no indicator for pain (we checked, twice), he is literally withering away and prolonging this will be completely and utterly for us, not for him and you all know by now, we would never, ever do that to our kids. He is home, on top of our warm bed and he will be so spoiled the next 24 hours. He will be hugged so much and will be told we love him until the moment he slips away in our arms Simon and I are devastated this is happening a 3rd time this year and this has been my fear for many, many years. Thank you all for being there for us and keep Ralph in your thoughts tomorrow as he starts his journey over the rainbow bridge.

This is a long tweet - but its worth a read - Reform UK’s Dr David Bull talking about family and whether parents should stay at home to look after their children: “You want to support marriage through the tax system and make it easier for parents to stay at home to look after their children - what's the reason behind that?” Dr David Bull: We believe that children do better in stable relationships across the board. And actually we need to encourage that. In marriage you think? Dr Bull: In marriage, and that marriage is an important bond, isn't it? Because I think what children desperately need is someone at home, and they need someone to be there and support them during that education. So we think that's a cornerstone, actually. And one of the things that I find really strange and very difficult to understand is the disconnect that children now have, because when you come home, you want to be able to offload what's been going on at school, and you need someone at home to be able to do that. And if we can incentivise that through tax breaks that has to be a good thing. Do you think if you're a child with two working parents, that's not a great upbringing for you? Dr Bull: No… Of course, it's incredibly difficult. And parents have to work because of the cost of living. But actually, the ideal would be to have a parent that is there available when children need them. You say in the manifesto that the majority of mothers would choose to stay at home more if they could. What's the research on that? Dr Bull: So we polled extensively, actually.
