Is there anyone who doesn’t call them long John’s?

I truly believe after all the reply’s here, that 98 percent of Americans call them Long John’s ! Case closed

@wvfunnyguy TBH, I thought everyone called them Long Johns.

Me too

@wvfunnyguy So we call them long johns here in Scotland 🏴 I wonder if the term came from you or from us.

🤷🏻♂️🤷🏻♂️ Good question

@wvfunnyguy Long John's is what they are called. Who the heck calls them thermal underwear?

🤣😂🤷🏻♂️🤷🏻♂️

@wvfunnyguy “Long John’s” are named after Boxing Champion John L. Sullivan - who fought wearing long thermal underwear. ⤵️

💯👊

@wvfunnyguy They called them that after a boxer named John Sullivan wore one piece thermal underwear in the ring and made them popular in the 1800s

😳😳

Wonder how the name came about?

@wvfunnyguy Got several pairs of long johns I use for hunting or plowing snow

@wvfunnyguy I am from Gatlinburg, TN. Long John’s were those full underwear with the flap in the back. What you may call a onesie today.

👊🇺🇸

@wvfunnyguy Grew up in California and then Midwest and we always called them long johns. Maybe started referring to them as base layer 10-15 years ago when I started buying the nice silk ones.

@wvfunnyguy I call them that. Think I picked it up from my grandparents.

I think that’s their name and manufacturer prob changed it to be politically correct

@wvfunnyguy Well screw that. Long Johns they shall be!

Yep

@wvfunnyguy I grew up in Florida where thermal underwear wasn’t needed. However, as far back as I can remember, even as a little Floridian kid, I always heard them called, “Long Johns.”

@wvfunnyguy Long Johns are also a common term in the Midwest.

@wvfunnyguy I've always called them long johns. Who calls them thermal underwear? 😂🤣

Right ? 😂😂🤣

@wvfunnyguy Always called them Long Johns

@wvfunnyguy From the Rockies - all the old folks called them ‘long handles’. I still call them that.

Interesting 🤨

@wvfunnyguy only nerds call Long Johns "thermal underwear"

@EmpiricalEnergy Fact 👊💯🤣😂

@wvfunnyguy Absolutely! I live in the deep South and long johns are what we wear one or two days during the winter and especially if it is cold on Mardi Gras day. Thermal underwear is a new term, relatively speaking.

@wvfunnyguy Yeah. I wore them to work under my suit and tie during the Blizzard of '78.

Indeed ! And they do their job

@wvfunnyguy We called thermal underwear: -Long Johns (but this was also a favorite donut name so it could be confusing) -Long Underwear From 5th Gen Arizonan

@wvfunnyguy I'm from central Indiana and they were always called Long Johns. I have no idea why.

@wvfunnyguy Western Ohio. We use Long Johns as well.

Yes back in Nebraska in the ‘70s I remember thermo underwear referred as Long Johns. I remember it so well because we had a bakery in town and they sold these donuts which were referred to as Long John’s. Whenever my mom would get me one I couldn’t help but think of my brothers saggy Long Johns underwear. Quite the visual when you’re trying to enjoy a nice sweet frosted donut.

@wvfunnyguy I grew up in upstate NY and they were referred to as long johns here too. 😊

They are ! 💯👊

@wvfunnyguy I’ve never used the term thermal underwear. I’ve only ever called them long johns. Im in Texas.

@wvfunnyguy Grew up on the Ohio River by the WV panhandle. I never knew what thermal underwear was growing up because we called them Long John’s!

Right 👊💯

@wvfunnyguy Long johns my hole life 😂

Yep

@wvfunnyguy Yes sir I have. Also Long handles out here in Wyoming.

💯👊

@wvfunnyguy I’m from Louisiana and we called them Long John’s. Also Long handles.

@wvfunnyguy We always called them Long Johns. I was born in Alabama and moved to Tennessee as a young girl. Every body I knew called them Long Johns.

@wvfunnyguy My parents were hardcore Brooklynites. I'm the first person in my family not born in Brooklyn in over 125 years. We always used Long John's. Not sure if but I think it's a generational thing.

💯💯👊

@wvfunnyguy That’s what we call them here in Arkansas.

💯👊

@wvfunnyguy Long John's is what we called them in Cajun Country Louisiana 🙄

@wvfunnyguy They've always been called long johns, its nothing special, and its not a cutesy southern/Appalachian dialect thing. But nice engagement farming, I guess.
