There's actually a book on this and other effects like it. This is a field of study termed "behavioral economics". Perhaps one of the best to communicate this publicly is an ad man from the famous ad agency "Ogilvy" from London. Rory Sutherland. Initially Otis, the elevator manufacturer, said they could replace them pully mechanism to make it faster for $1m or something - back in the 60s... And some mad lad recommended this solution instead...

Also to reduce the effect of claustrophobia. The mirror makes the lift seem bigger so you don't feel like you are in a tin can.
