As much I hate that we didn’t win, I have to say this man speaks the truth. For the first time since Pep took the helm in Man City, Arsenal made them the defensive team in today’s game. I always say every game can be a win in at least one way, and today’s win is that Arsenal are seen as a dangerous team in the minds of great managers like Pep.

Oh yes! He is! If Arsenal had played the way Manchester City played yesterday, he would have been heavily criticised. His team was dominant in most facets of the game, he is being criticised, and to be honest even if he had one, he would have still been criticised. There seems to be always something to criticise him or the team for. Nobody, absolutely nobody wants to win major honours more than Arteta and this amazing team of players he has put together. Do fans think they care about winning more than Arteta or the players themselves? One thing is certain, this team is now a juggernaut in every facet of play. You don't force Pep to adopt a defensive approach he has always distanced himself from, in the manner this Arsenal team did in the match. It was something to behold! We can critise Arteta for not starting an Eze in the first half because it would have made the team more creative and rightly so, but what is to say that with Eze in the first half, Arsenal wouldn't have conceded that goal still. I keep hearing he setup not to lose because he played with 3 DMs. Please with all due respect, when has Arteta ever played with 3 DMs. Arteta's midfield since 22/23 season has always been made up of a 6 (holding midfielder that helps with defensive cover), a left 8 (box to box) and a 10 (usually operating from the RCM). Zubi is the 6, Rice is the 8 and Odegaard is usually the 10. Besides their responsibilities when the ball is in possession, they have responsibilities when the ball is out of possession (OOP). In Arteta's midfield, the RCM's role OOP is lead the press, something Odegaard does to great effect. The other RCM options when Odegaard isn't available in Nwanneri and now Eze may be very adept with the role when the ball is in possession but may not be so adept of the role OOP. Arteta and the coaching crew are in the training sessions with them, and they can analyse this in real time. When Arteta is playing against smaller teams, in terms of footballing capacity, and Odegaard isn't available, he doesn't mind, because he knows the margins of error from the RCM OOP responsibilities can be mitigated, but those margins become bigger when playing a bigger team with a bigger footballing capacity. So he picks a player who best offers both the RCM OOP responsibilties as well as fulfill the in-possesion responsibilities to an appreciable level, and for now that is Merino because he is already doing it at an appreciable level for the Spanish National Team, and this will continue until Eze and Nwanneri can show without a doubt that they can fulfill both the RCM offensive and defensive roles to great effect. In my opinion, I believe Eze and Nwanneri can do it, but Arteta and the coaching crew would rather prefer to give them runouts to get up to speed with their RCM/10 OOP roles against the likes of Leeds and Nottingham Forest rather than against the likes of Liverpool and Manchester City, but unfortunately Arsenal have had to play 3 of the traditional top 6 in the 5 matches played so far, hence why we have seen Merino in that role in 2 of them as well as in the CL match. Lest we forget, Merino is actually a primary alternative to the left 8 position which Rice occupies, therefore let's remove sentiments and be objective in footballing contexts and not go on emotional summersaults. Winning major honours is no longer a question of if for this current Arsenal team but when and it is imminent.
