It’s either they are not prisoners by the law or he must have gone through the right process for their release.

About 20-30 percent of inmate in prison has bail condition and couldn’t meet it that’s why they remain their, if someone comes to meet the bail condition they will be automatically release . So apparently this might be the case .

This is just a ceremony abstracting over legal due process, they are most likely folks who couldn't meet their bail conditions or petty criminals awaiting trial.

why would one think even the Oba of benin will just go to a prison and order the release of inmates without legal procedures. And their case must be a bailable one not murder cases or those condemned ones.

Some inmates were sentenced to imprisonment term with an option of fine, so they either pay the fine or spend the term. If the king offers to pay their fine on their behalf, they get released. You also can release any prisoner provided their sentence has an option of fine!

He isn't releasing prisoners... He paid off their fines and they were released. It will amaze you to know that over 60% of people in Nigerian prisons are there Cos of fines they couldn't pay. It's people held with options of fine not people serving jail terms without fine option.
