Obviously, there was no context given. These quotes are designed to incite the emotions of those that are dedicated to 20th Century liberalism. Joel was called out by Phil publicly, so he responded publicly. He warned Phil not to go down the same road as the G3 clowns, lest his ministry suffer the same fate as G3. That’s a perfectly reasonable admonition, and Joel did not engage in the same tactics that Phil used against him. Phil, for his part, decided to play the victim as the cancer patient. I suspect that’s why he was picked to give this message.
