Does basic government stupidity bother you? This is 40 year old obsolete technology. If we replaced 5%/ year it would take 20 years to replace it all. We could have started 5 years ago.

Guard rails are the most important thing to the guard rail guy. Similarly hand rails to the hand rail guy and stair treads to the stair tread guy. Replacing guard rails that have been in place without impact long enough to rust is likely not a priority.

Guardrail tells a story and we should listen. If it has not been hit it probably should be REMOVED and not replaced.

Illogical. The impact of guard rails (no pun intended) is not merely the physical barrier, but the visual presence of a physical barrier indicating there is something important to be protected from (such as a drop-off) and the obvious direct damage risk from contacting it.

By the same logic lining the road with toddlers also provides delineation. Delineation also provides delineation and it's much safer.

The problem is that the age of the guardrail tells you that people have to die before they will take matters seriously and replace them. I would not like that it has come to this. I hope you can influence the change! :)

If it's 40 years old, that means no one hit it and therefore it is unlikely to be needed in the first place. Thats a lot of trafic in 40 years that never even once hit it. Government doesn't have endless resources to replace things that aren't needed.

Not to undermine the point: the rail is still standing after 40 years and it hasn't caused any issues in all that time. Seems like a low traffic area and therefore a very low priority concern to me.

I watched your 'shouty' video, nowhere do you tell us what you would replace guard rails with. What is the updated tech; is it wire rope fences? Wire rope seems to be the current technology being deployed in Australia.

I understand why you do what you do, its just incredibly interesting for someone to be so passionate about something none of us ever think about. Keep doing what youre doing man, your daughter would be proud I'm sure.

Perhaps if people drove better, guard rails would not be needed. You should use your time better. Instead of trying to make driving stupidly better, we should let those perish that are intended. The natural order of things.

Those barriers are designed to stop glancing blows at speed tor passenger vehicles. They work for that. What else do you want them to do?

I don’t think you know what you’re talking about. This technology was developed almost 100 years ago (1933) and is still effective. In fact, if you drive through Europe today you will see they are replacing their old guard rails with this very same w-beam product.

All guardrails should be removed. They cause more harm than whatever benefit they provide, certainly for the vast amount of money government spends installing and maintaining them.

Easier solution. Dont hit the guardrail.

If we replace all human drivers with self-driving cars, we won't need to replace all the guard rails.

I lost control on an icy bridge in my father in laws old power ram 2500, filled to the max because we were using it to move. One of those guardrails saved us from dropping off the edge onto I-94. It messed that truck up though and over a decade later I still feel bad about it.

They make incredibly strong plastic these days. Is it cheaper than steel? Further -- autonomous vehicles will reduce road runoff wrecks to zero. Assuming they haven't already in vehicles with the tech. We are in a time where upgrading the vehicle is more productive than upgrading the road.

If no one has run into it in 40 years, why replace it with something that no one else is likely to run into? We need to cost/benefit human life because resources are limited. That is the unfortunate reality of regulatory spending.

This happened in Malaysia last year. 15 lives lost.

Princess Diana died because the French wanted their tunnel to look nice--no guardrail at all between the road and a row of pillars.

Don’t hit them. This seems like the best solution.

They no longer exist, but when they did, motorcyclists would cut used tires in half and wrap the pillar in tire (especially on curves). This way, the pillar no longer posed a danger in motorcycle accidents.

Do you have an engineering source you could share which discusses the failure mode of these guardrails?

Of any of these things happened to that barrier in 40 years? Statistical return on investment, there are far better safety returns per $ than this barrier.

It’s so obsolete that it outlasted the NCHRP 350 becoming obsolete … MASH is the new standard.
