unless he just made that paint, then guessing how a color is made is actually really hard. Show him a random color from another shop, and he wont be able to color match it on the first try, maybe on the 3rd or 4th try.

This is a gift. I have this as well. I do not see colors from front to back I see them from the back to the front. I do not see colors as a solid I see them almost like a burst. I think other people can train their minds to do the same thing. I was just born with it and I think he was too.

I did that for a number of years fir my dad's paint manufactoring company, from gallons to 4000 gallon vats, without a color matching computer. I occasionally had trouble with off white greenish tones but otherwise dead on. My dad did the same.

Women's color vision is better than men's. Due to the influence of the X-chromosome color vision gene, women's color recognition ability is said to be four times that of men. Men can distinguish seven colors, while women can distinguish 29 colors. Of course, there are exceptions, and this does not apply to everyone. This man certainly has the same abilities as women.

My 11 year-old can do this and it's awesome. I'm not saying it doesn't take skill. I'm saying it's a savant thing to be able to eyeball this. Somehow, my daughter can mix color better than anyone at the paint shops we've been to in DFW. It's incredible and she does it all by eye. My wife relies on her when we go to pick out paints now because she always nails not only the color, but how it'll look in the specific light of the rooms.
