Good question, could be a bit of both, likely dozens of resets and timelines. I think at one time earth was a quarry on huge scale, after the work it was flooded, check the sea and lake contours, evidence exists ⬇️

All that sand and no scorch marks? Submerged if I had to pick one. Plant life, if any, would've deteriorated back into the earth.

Strange to me. Herculaneum is allegedly younger and instantaneously buried yet nowhere near as well preserved. Obviously the geology is different though.
