A Hunter College professor is under investigation after her hot-mic comments about systemic racism at a NYC school meeting. The remarks were made while discussing school closures affecting Black students. FIRE is alarmed at Hunter College’s investigation of Professor Allyson Friedman. Discussions of systemic racism fall squarely within the First Amendment rights this public college is legally required to uphold. Friedman clarified that as a parent, she was explaining the concept of systemic racism to her child in the room with her, by referencing a historical example. Nonetheless, Hunter College publicly announced that it would be investigating the professor’s “abhorrent” comments. Faculty have the right to discuss political issues off hours, especially those related to their children’s schooling and local communities. We call on the college to end its investigation and affirm the expressive rights of its faculty.

Don’t tell me that systemic racism doesn’t exist in America. It’s being led by the GOP, and Tennessee is the perfect example. Today TN Republicans expelled 2 black men — Justin Jones and Justin Pearson — for protesting, but didn’t expel the white woman Gloria Johnson. Not only are Republicans in Tennessee exuding disgusting racism but they are trying to take away free speech from Democrats. Justin Pearson and Justin Jones are American heroes. This is why we must vote in every election, even on the state level. We must say enough is enough to MAGA Republicans.
