Does this actually help?

Yes removing water from an overflowing pool will actually help it to stop overflowing

Isn’t this doing the exact same thing it would do if it overfilled

So you don’t want it to overflow on the ground so you drain it… on the ground.

“Pools about to overflow! Better use this siphon to make it overflow!”

Some of these tricks are insane

Revealing magic tricks

With this way you can get free oxygen while swimming

A nut driver, or flat head screwdriver woulda worked as well…. Science is cool… But Practical Engineering is where it’s at..

With this method you can control where it leaks/drains. My guess would be this is the opposite side that the house is located, so this way the extra water wouldn't overwhelm the sump pump

Hilarious, The pool is about to overflow so I’ll have a pipe to … take water from the pool and dump it on the ground… just like what was about to happen except now I’m dumping it all into one spot where it will erode the ground and cause more damage. Genius 🙄

I think by siphoning the water, it may just prevent from the water overflowing all at once. Possibly causing damaging to the surrounding areas, maybe even a mini flood. So siphoning will work to stop a wave from coming out all at once.

It does. It's just a simple siphon, and it'll mean the water never quite overflows the pool walls, helping to avoid the walls buckling and causing it to all spill out.

So instead of overflowing, it’s overflowing where you tell it to overflow? While it rains thereby making everything around wet anyway. Whew, thank god you paid attention in science class.

why not just discharge the water using the fucking pump right there?

Is there some reason above ground pools shouldn't overflow?

@grok context

This setup uses a plunger and hose to create a siphon, draining excess water from an overflowing pool via gravity. It works if the outlet is lower than the pool level and the hose is primed (filled with water, no air pockets). It's a valid DIY method, though slow with a small hose. For faster drainage, consider a pump.

@bestgadgetsx @CNviolations The siphon directs water to a specific spot, avoiding uncontrolled overflow that could erode soil, flood unwanted areas, or damage the pool structure. It also lowers the level below the rim, preventing further spilling even if inflow continues. Not a waste if control matters.

@bestgadgetsx @CNviolations Fair, but the hose allows directing water to a chosen spot on the ground, like toward a drain or away from your house's foundation, preventing erosion or flooding in unwanted areas. Uncontrolled overflow spills everywhere around the pool.

@bestgadgetsx @CNviolations Haha, fair enough! Just to wrap up: in the video, the siphon directs flow to one spot, which can prevent pooling around the pool's base. Science class for the win. 😊

Why not let the pool overflow - I do - gives a great infinity pool for a few days

Ahhhh instead of overflowing, it's just flowing over the side. Smart

does it help? doesn't seem so... pools about to overflow and spill on the ground so you use a small pipe to drain it on to the ground... why not just let the pool spill over by itself?

Siphons, yes, but where has he redirected the overflowing water? Genius and stupidity can go hand in hand sometimes...

Yes it works. Also, just let the pool overflow. It’s not going to hurt anything.

Breaking News…Man stops pool from over flowing by making it over flow.

I'm going to guess that where he's letting the water flow out is better than it overflowing everywhere else?

If you're just going to pour it on the ground right beside the pool, why are you worried about it overflowing?

Ill just send my kids over there. It will be down about 6 inches in no time

I have no idea what is the gain in this situation, but I have no pool so might be missing something crucial.

I would do that away not to erode the pool base; but your filter has a dump to waste function I do use a siphon on occasion if I need to get a lot of water out but the other end is well away from the pool

He just overflowed it himself 😂💀

Did you just ask if siphoning actually siphons?

@grok Why not just let it overflow?

The magic of siphons

He just made it overflow all in one spot

Why not open the back flush/waste valve and release it? That’s what I do to mine.
