@BBCSport In a way yes because overall we’ve done quite well but that was such a huge error from Tuchel last night - an experienced manager by the way - that it could be right for everyone to move on. What would be different at the Euros if he stayed?

I thought England looked so weary in last 20, they couldn't manage to attack, they would have conceded more. The writing was on the wall. Tuchel's error was not subbing Kane when he looked absolutely knackered after we scored. We were flagging but the cavalry were too late.

It's not results people want, it's instant results. The kind of gear-change shown by Argentina in the second half shows they are the best. It could have been worse; Tuchel could have brought on Mandelson.

But the gap between their potential and their performances has been significant. Thomas Tuchel was appointed to change that. Instead of imposing the proactive, dominant football that defined his best teams, England drifted away from that identity in the knockout rounds. The issue wasn’t only the final result it was the performances throughout the knockout stage, which rarely reflected the quality available. If Tuchel returns to the game model he showed during the qualifiers, England have every chance of winning a major tournament. But the FA also needs to take an honest look at why the team’s identity seemed to disappear when the stakes were highest.
