I think Virginia has sent a message that we want a Congress that’s going to stand up to Trump and do its job. All of his actions have hurt Virginians. Were you at all surprised at the margin of victory this time wasn’t larger?” Virginia Democrat Gov. Abigail Spanberger: “I wasn’t. “Our democracy” is simply Rousseau’s General Will. It declares one side the rightful owner of the system, so an election loss becomes an attack on democracy itself instead of democracy working. Rousseau said the nation has a single General Will, the true interest of the people, separate from what individuals actually vote for. Anyone who rejects it can be forced to be free because their dissent only proves they misunderstand their real interest. Replace “General Will” with “our democracy” and the logic is the same. The other side is not a rival to persuade but a threat to something you already embody.
