HTML enters 3D! Or vice versa? With the new HTML in Canvas by WICG, we can finally put native DOM elements directly into WebGL/WebGPU scenes. It is experimental for now, but the possibilities for 3D interfaces and special effects are huge. One of my favorite details of Sonner: By default the toast disappears after 4 seconds unless you hover over it. But what if a toast is triggered and the user switches to a different tab? 4 seconds would pass and the toast would never be seen. That’s why there’s a `useIsDocumentHidden` hook that checks if the document (tab) is hidden, and if so, it will pause the timer. This can be done with the "visibilitychange" event listener on the document. A small detail that improves the experience.

The worst take about the web is that you should not use JS/React/etc because HTML alone is good enough. It's an 'austerity mind virus' that has captured even some smart engineers. The idea that the web is for 'documents' and if it stays in its own little box like 1995 it's going to somehow be better for the world. This is how we ended up with Safari having the most obnoxious limitations, including a back/forward navigation gesture that makes the web feel like a horrendous 'digital book' of sorts. No, the web is also for dynamic, rich, interactive applications. JS is a key ingredient in the recipe, otherwise every click and interaction will have to hit a server, feel slow, and we'll always be a second class citizen. The web's developer freedom & better deployment model will win in the end, but it can't come at the expense of quality.

This wasn't possible until now. The tech literally didn't exist. html-in-canvas lets shaders read and redraw your real DOM in real time, while text stays selectable and links stay clickable. Everyone else has demos. This is a full library. A new dimension for the web. Literally.

The nascent HTML-in-Canvas API is exciting to me not for flashy effects, but because it extends the semantics that the DOM can (tractably) represent — tiny example: it's possible to show an element in multiple places, cheaply, under arbitrary transforms.

I found a much cleaner way to browse the newly released UFO files. The site is called Show Me UFOs, and it is significantly easier to use than the Department of War 🇺🇸 release page. You can sort the files by document type, agency, date, and even explore them through an interactive map. Fine, I'll bite. Paper will never, ever, eat Figma's lunch. Not Paper, not Claude Design, not Google Stitch, not V0, bolt, lovable, base44 or any of the HTML/CSS-based canvas. Why? The number one reason: Performance. Paper struggles at 2-5K elements of plain rectangles For comparison, in the attached video: a small, early-stage exploration canvas with 13K elements. Real-world projects are tens of thousands sometimes hundreds of thousands of elements. Why do you think Figma has a hyper-optimized webGL rendering engine? It would've been way easier to have an HTML/CSS-based canvas if that was feasible. Figma's money comes from tens of thousands of organizations where *at the very minimum* need to support these canvas sizes. Does it hurt Figma that many individuals and small teams are switching to other tools? arguable. Does Paper have better *MCP support* than Figma*? 1000 percent. Not even close. but MCP support != better overall or even an option for most. I'm not saying Figma's lunch won't be eaten. I have a huge horse in that game, betting it will be. I'm saying *HTML/CSS-based canvases, specifically* won't.

Western coverage keeps shrinking this to one militia and one strip of coast because a regional ideology is harder to manage than a “peace process.” Factions are useful that way. A Tale of Two Cities // When I went to document the ICE protests in DTLA, I asked my sister to document what other parts of LA looked like at the same time. All of these clips you see are from June 8th, 2025. I included a farmers market I walked by just a few blocks from the protest and an ice cream truck in another part of DTLA to emphasize the point. The media wants to tell you that all of Los Angeles is a war zone. That’s just not true. Don’t fall for it. This protest started from a place of protection. We love our neighbors. We love Los Angeles.

🚨Gemini 3.6 Flash is trash I tested it on a 3D Golden Gate Bridge, and the results were awful. • I had to re-prompt it three times because it repeatedly ignored the instructions. • First attempt, instead of creating the requested .html file, it first tried to build the experience inside the Gemini app using simulations. • Then second attempt it started placing images from the web into the chat rather than actually producing the file. • Even after getting it to complete the task, the final output was dramatically worse than Gemini 3.1 Pro, which is 5 months old and now not even a top 10 model on leaderboards. This feels like a regression from Gemini 3.5 Flash and honestly, it is one of the weakest models I have tested in the past few months. Has anyone else tested Gemini 3.6 Flash yet, and are you seeing the same thing?
