Lots to unpack as Jake Fischer discusses the Domantas Sabonis/Toronto Raptors trade talks this season: -The Kings thought that Toronto and Washington were the two landing spots for Sabonis. -The Wizards were shopping around Khris Middleton’s $33M-expiring contract, and some draft capital to see what sort of center they could land (ultimately ended up acquiring AD). -Wizards inquired about players like Sabonis, KAT, potentially Zion as well. -“The second the Wizards went and got Anthony Davis, that kind of took a lot of Sacramento’s leverage with Toronto, trying to get first round draft capital for Domantas Sabonis, and the Raptors were just not willing to do so.” This lead to some friction between the two teams regarding negotiating draft capital. -“The only contract of significant consequence that Toronto was offering, that Sacramento was willing to take back, was RJ Barrett.” Kings GM (and former Knicks executive) Scott Perry was with the Knicks when they drafted RJ. -Jakob Pöltl’s contract was considered “onerous” around the league. -Jake says he has confirmed with various sources that Memphis was open to taking on Jakob Pöltl’s contract. -The Raptors had conversations on Daniel Gafford as well. Ham says it has been difficult to confirm the rumour. The trade package would be “very similar” to the one at the most recent trade deadline: Sabonis for RJ Barrett + Gradey Dick. The Kings and Raptors came “extremely close” to a trade a week before the trade deadline. Things got complicated at the trade deadline when the Raptors wanted someone to take on Jakob Pöltl’s contract, and all of a sudden, did not want to give the Kings any draft capital, because it was going to cost the Raptors to move off from the Pöltl contract. 🔗:

Jake Fischer: -The Raptors are confirmed to have interest in Anthony Davis. -Raps would certainly rather prefer Giannis (if/when he’s available for trade) than AD, if the price points are relatively similar -He doesn’t believe there are many teams that are willing to give up “valuable capital, valuable contracts, valuable players” for AD, and then pay him another contract extension that will reward “north of $70 million” when he’s a 37 year old player. -The Raptors also have “some sort of interest” in Domantas Sabonis. -Teams that are in the AD/Sabonis trade talks are not going to make a move for them before they know for sure Giannis is unavailable for trade. -For Toronto, Both AD and Sabonis would come at a price point that Toronto doesn’t necessarily view as “a great cost.” -He believes the “appetite” of how aggressive Toronto will be dependent upon closer to the end of January for Bobby Webster to see how good Toronto really is. -RJ Barrett’s contract is “a major salary piece” that could theoretically go out the door.
