Baldwin: Republicans have had well over a decade to come up with a health care plan. They always talked about repeal and replace. The only thing they’ve ever really put any detail into is the repeal part. They’ve never actually had a plan to replace the Affordable Care Act, despite saying that’s what they wanted to do all along. Without that extension, people are seeing shocking increases in their premiums compared to last year. I spoke with a small business owner in Milwaukee named Nancy. Nancy is a cancer survivor. She cannot afford to be without health care because she has special medical needs. But her premiums are tripling in cost—and that is not an unusual story in Wisconsin or across the nation. So we have an urgent situation, and we need to address it first. The plans I’ve seen floated at the very eleventh hour by Republicans aren’t even thought through. They are half-baked, and that is ridiculous. We need to extend the premium tax credits so working families can afford their health care. Then we need to get to doing big, bold reforms so nobody is left out because of affordability.
