Flooding issue resolved in 70% of the identified areas of Bengaluru, remaining to be fixed soon. We had identified 210 areas as flood prone in Bengaluru. Ever since I took over as the Bengaluru Development Minister, we have fixed flooding issues in 166 (70%) of those localities. Arterial drainage maintenance works on the River Morningstar at Athlacca, Co. Limerick. These works were completed by the Office of Public Works (OPW) during the period November 2025 to January 2026. I visited the site last week when the machines had already left the site. However, I have been provided with photos showing the works underway. Significant areas of riparian woodland have been removed, and alluvial woodland was also cleared from islands within the river. There is evidence of substantial silt mobilisation and in-stream disturbance. The riverbanks have been destabilised as a result of the removal of trees and other vegetation. Although silt fences are now present, they did not prevent fine sediment and wet soil from entering the channel during the work. Machines tracked instream during the salmonid close season. This damage will affect the river for years to come, and a permanent loss of riparian woodland has occurred. The removal of woodland set back from the riverbank extends well beyond what would be considered to be river maintenance works. The River Morningstar is an important salmonid nursery and spawning tributary of the River Maigue. The lower reaches of the River Maigue form part of the Lower River Shannon Special Area of Conservation (SAC) and the River Shannon and River Fergus Estuaries Special Protection Area (SPA). Works like these are completed under the Arterial Drainage Act (1945). They are supposed to protect against flooding, but in reality, they have the opposite effect. By draining water off farmland too quickly, river works like this increase flood risk in downstream urban areas. This work was completed to protect wet farmland in a natural floodplain. We do need flood mitigation measures - but they need to be effective, sustainable, and based on evidence. In most cases that means slowing the flow of water through natural flood management techniques and restoring floodplains and wetlands to absorb excess water rather than pushing it downstream. We need to reform the Arterial Drainage Act (1945) and recognise the vital role that floodplains, alluvial woodlands and wetlands play in flood management and mitigation. Instead of fighting against nature, we should be working with it to ensure communities are truly protected in the long term. A healthy, functioning river catchment benefits everyone - not just wildlife, but the people who live alongside it too.

There are not enough prisons, hospitals, power stations, or other critical infrastructure. The Irish indigenous economy is weak. Government spending under FG & FF has exploded and we would be running at multi year deficits if they had to rely on the Irish indigenous economy. The US multinational is keeping Ireland on life support, and Fine Gael and Fianna Fáil desperately need to keep these foreign companies staffed with migrant employees. This woman’s daughter bought a used car two weeks ago and it’s been in the shop 9 days out of those two weeks. The warranty won’t fix the issues the car has because the issues are being caused by an accident. I feel the dealership failed big time on this trade in. Why take a car on trade that has issues they refuse to fix. I can’t imagine them selling a car to anyone and saying that the warranty is voided because of extensive damage caused by an accident. I was deeply troubled to see this video on social media this afternoon. For those who may not know, this is from #Syanachatti in #Uttarkashi district in #Uttarakhand. It’s heartbreaking to share that the village of #Dharali, which suffered a devastating tragedy on August 5th is also in the same district. Both places have one thing in common beyond the fury of the 2025 monsoon. They are just about 20 odd kilometers short of the sacred shrines of #Yamunotri and #Gangotri. While Dharali and nearby #Harsil have been struggling for over two weeks with the formation of a lake on the Bhagirathi (Ganga) river, another rain induced landslide has now created a lake along the Yamuna river in the same district. What you see and hear in the video are locals in sheer anguish who are angry, frustrated, and desperate for help. It’s a cry for attention that cannot be ignored by anyone who is humane and sensitive to the suffering and pain of others. At this difficult hour, I stand in solidarity with them and urge the Uttarakhand government, all its #Dehradun based agencies and the district administration to do everything possible to manage this critical situation. While all houses and hotels were evacuated earlier and residents asked to move to higher ground, I am certain that a lot more is being expected from our authorities. With broken roads and the monsoon showing no mercy, things look extremely worrying. My heartfelt prayers for the safety of everyone in Syanachatti and the entire rain battered region. May normalcy return soon. 🙏
