Another thought. Being proud about your country isn’t about its history and what it’s done or not done, it’s about a sense of belonging. It reaffirms home and with that, a sense of security. Take away that? That’s a dangerous path.

World War I, my grandad who was the youngest of many children, he lost his brother and Cousin within four weeks of each other. World War II my grandad signed up to serve his country, he was captured and taken to a Japanese POW camp, he spent years in that camp and was experimented on. There is a news article from the 80s where my grandfather was fighting for compensation for his injuries, he spent many months in and out of Hosptial because he had recurring malaria and TB from the POW camp. When he was liberated from the camp he was sent to the Caribbean because the government at the time, (the establishment) however you wanna say it didn’t want the public to see what happened to those men in those camps (if you think the Nazis were bad, The Japanese were worse.) When my grandad returned, he was treated as a deserter because he was captured to me. It feels like the government would’ve preferred he didn’t come back. I only found out this part in recent years and it broke my heart knowing how my grandad was treated when he returned home he did not get the heroes welcome he deserved and I’m so angry. I have a son who’s in his 20s and this government has zero chance of getting him on the battlefield and I am one of millions who feel this way. The only soil my family will be fighting on British soil.
