had a chance to talk to @0dayCTF at DEFCON a few weeks ago and the dude is fucking brilliant. this only catches one specific type of surveillance, but it’s still an insanely useful tool. a Stingray pretends to be a cell tower. if one is operating nearby, your phone may connect to it like it would a normal tower, which can expose certain cellular signaling and identifying information. Rayhunter watches the cellular signaling your phone receives and flags behavior consistent with an IMSI catcher.

This isn’t actually that complicated. You know how many people other than race car drivers know about police radar scanners? They don’t realize you can get a machine that literally tells you when a cop is nearby. There’s a lot of cheap, accessible tools like this one.
