We have millions of highly qualified Americans, who have put in the work, earned the degrees, built the skills, and deserve to be judged on merit. Not skin color. Not checkboxes. My father’s a retired Colonel, my brother, sister, and I all graduated from West Point, and in 2006, the three of us were stationed in Baghdad together. We’ve bled for this country. We’ve sacrificed for it. And now, in my early 40s, I’m ready to give my best years back, because the U.S. Senate is not a retirement home. I was the first person in the nation to endorse President Trump, and I’ve stood by him every step of the way. And if you still see America only through the lens of chains and plantations, you’re ignoring the power of what this country actually is. My great-great-grandfather was born a slave on Rosedown Plantation just north of Baton Rouge, Louisiana. That’s not a history book. That’s my bloodline. Fast forward a few generations. Three of his great-great-grandchildren graduated from West Point. Three served in the United States military. At one point, my brother, my sister, and I were all deployed to Baghdad at the same time: defending this great nation. And now? One of his descendants is running for the United States Senate — and surging. Not because of the color of my skin. Not because of a box I check. But because of service. Because of character. Because I love this country and I’m willing to fight for it. And yes… I’ve done all of this as a conservative. Here’s the question no one on the left wants to answer: If America is systemically racist and permanently broken… how does a family go from slavery to West Point to combat deployments to United States Congress in just a few generations? That’s how you get ahead in America, not by wallowing in grievance & victimhood. My grandparents lived in a country where they were colonial subjects of Great Britain, but we don’t get ahead by driving with our eyes in the rearview mirror. The reality is that most people affirmative action pretends to help are *not* descendants of slaves but descendants of immigrants that came to America. Giving special preferences to someone who *looks like* a person who once suffered is not justice. We should finally embrace colorblind meritocracy in America rather than repeat our past mistakes. Yesterday, 50 years ago, I was forced to leave everything I had ever known behind. In the dark haze of the morning, my family and I fled as everything around us crumbled. Saigon had fallen, and so had the lives my family had built for us. Fortunate to be embraced by American kindness and opportunity, I earned my place as an American and Texan. Ever since arriving in this great state so many years ago, I never took for granted this blessing of freedom, opportunity, and compassion. From my first job in the United States as a busboy to being a member of the greatest state legislature in the nation, I serve, I speak, I fight for freedom and opportunity because it is never guaranteed. To my family, my friends & fellow 🇳🇱 citizens The Netherlands Institute for Human Rights ruled that the Dutch Immigration and Naturalisation Service (IND) discriminated against me because of my political beliefs. I respect the decision. Almost two years later, I am still excluded. My situation has not been fixed. That is very hard for me to understand. I never wanted to share this story. I speak four languages, I have a master’s degree in International Relations and Security, and I simply wanted to participate in the Dutch society & use my knowledge and life experience to help a better & safer Netherlands. Finding out that I was judged not by my skills, but by who I am, hurt me deeply. At the same time, it gave me a fire inside that will never go out. I belong to the Kurdish-Yezidi community, one of the most persecuted ethnic and religious minorities in the world. I never expected this to happen to me in the Netherlands, especially by the government itself. While many people my age are building their future, I have spent almost two years fighting the third largest ministry in the Netherlands: the Ministry of Justice and Security. I did not choose this. But the Netherlands is a democratic country governed by the rule of law. That is why I am taking the Dutch State to court in The Hague. Not only for myself, but for everyone who wants to be judged by their qualities, not by their political identity. Thank you.
