Assateague State Park has issued double red flag conditions, meaning all ocean access is prohibited—this includes swimming, surfing, wading, and any other water activities. While the beach remains open at this time, it may close if conditions worsen and access becomes unsafe due to rising storm surge. Tropical Storm Erin, a large and powerful system, is bringing increasing wave activity, coastal flooding, and hazardous surf conditions. A Tropical Storm Watch is now in effect for coastal waters, and the risk of rip currents is high. Beach and dune erosion is expected, particularly from Wednesday evening through Thursday as the storm passes offshore. The campground remains open, and all campers have been advised to monitor updates, follow all safety restrictions, and secure any loose items.

NHC message: “Jamaica: Seek shelter now. Damaging winds and heavy rainfall today and on Monday will cause catastrophic and life-threatening flash flooding and numerous landslides before the strongest winds arrive Monday night and Tuesday morning. Extensive infrastructural damage, long-duration power and communication outages, and isolation of communities are expected. Authorities evacuated more than 8,300 residents from coastal and mountain areas and closed schools as the tropical storm reached Taiwan’s southern regions. Earlier, Fung-Wong hit the Philippines as a super typhoon, causing floods, landslides, and killing at least 27 people. The storm has since weakened but continues to bring heavy rain and flooding. The worst-affected area is Hualien County, where floodwaters swept away a car, and rivers have already overflowed their banks.
