The latest data from the huge GP-Patient Survey (692K respondents, published in July 2024) indicates that 4.6% of the population currently have Long Covid. That’s equivalent to 3.1 MILLION people across the UK. “DON’T MENTION IT” 🤫

According to a recent report from the Economist: 🚨More than 251.8 MILLION work hours may be lost due to Long Covid in 2024. 🚨The economic cost of Long Covidis estimated to be over US$15.5 BILLION, equivalent to 0.5% of GDP. “DON’T MENTION IT!” 🤫

A THIRD of healthcare workers are now suffering from Long Covid… “DON’T MENTION IT!!” 🤫

Against a backdrop of ongoing high rates of Covid across the year: ▪️HALF of all pupil absences from school are due to ILLNESS. ▪️ILLNESS absence is still 40% higher than the pre-pandemic rate. “DON’T MENTION IT” 🤫 (Let’s try to blame it all on term-time holidays instead!)

According to official government statistics, the number of children with Long Covid nearly DOUBLED in a year (between March 2023 & March 2024), soaring to over 111K children in England & Scotland. That’s more than 1,000 new cases PER WEEK across the year. “DON’T MENTION IT!” 🤫

“Do you run a health service battered by an explosion in long-term sickness but would rather ignore one obvious cause?” “Long Covid is a massive factor in long-term sickness but, unlike many countries, we restrict vaccine boosters to a few.” “DON’T MENTION IT!” 🤫

What I LOVE is the "Dont mention it" of telling sick and disabled people to avoid getting Covid, to put DNRs on them, and almost simultaneously stating that they really need to be at work*! (*To replace all the people too sick to work because they caught covid - often at work.)

So good!! How many more elephants can we fit into the room?! 🐘🐘🐘🐘🐘 (But vaccines don’t prevent #LongCovid I’m afraid - only reducing Covid transmission can do that.)
