don’t use CCA cables

so first of all, you can read all about the signal degradation & safety risks by googling this or looking at fluke networks’ write ups. also, have you heard of fire codes? if your building catches fire for any reason, clearly CCA cables will worsen the issue. this is why they’re illegal to install. skin effect is moot here. again, easily googleable. POE will cause heat which will lead to quick degradation of aluminum wire. once again—against spec for a reason. fire hazard. and overall signal degradation regardless.

@TracketPacer Well you sure sounded like it in your first comment. They you got all moody and sad because she knows what's up and you don't even understand fire codes lol.

@TracketPacer "Scientology nazi-like fire codes." In what world is any of this relevant, important or true? Never mind, I'm sure I don't want to know.

dont use aluminum because the plastic jackets were different materials what kind of logic is this

Whoever sells this kind of cable should be put in jail tbh.

For science I want to see max POE in a stressed setup of a bundle of these (zip tie pinches, kinks, bundles all at 100w) and see if it ignites/how hot it gets.

will do my best 🫡 at the very least i’ll be doing cable tests with it vs the real copper stuff

You’re doing fantastic work. As a former rack and stacker I love attention to this physical layer stuff. I STILL hate some manufacturers that seemed to sharpen their rails to razor blades or have SFP pull tabs that ripped off.

If you buy cheap on Amazon you are buying CCA cables. Looking at you MONKcables. What Amazon is allowing on their platform should be illegal.

On the upside, CCA makes a great fuse for new year's or 4th of July shenanigans.

This looks like a poor choice of wire coating. Plenum rated cable, whether CCA or solid/stranded copper, should only smoke a little, and not burn, when exposed to flame. Not all ethernet cables are plenum rated. (most patch cables have no requirements beyond UL 1685, because they're not permanent installs, which allows up to 8 feet of vertical flame propagation.) solid aluminum doesn't burn *at all* unless you get it very hot with a high surface area (eg powdered and dispersed in air), and if you were seeing that the flame would be extremely bright and hot, like a magnesium fire. It would also melt. Your wire is staying solid, so it's only the coating burning.

PVC smoke from a fire is kinda nasty, in a plenum it can be deadly

A lot of structured cable is laid by non certified low voltage companies who find ‘cheap boxes of cat6’… which is this cca garbage. Would love to see you run some certifier tests and performance tests on copper vs cca cat 6 . Particularly of longer lengths.

That's why the code says to use plenum for indoors applications. Duh!

Not to mention CCA cable is a PAIN to work with. Give me copper or give me death.

Ok so you don't know the difference between riser and plenum cable.

you striped the jacket off the end of the copper and then act surprised when you light the jacket on fire of the CCA because you didnt strip it. extremely disengenious video

Just cut through the wire and see the silver color inside. But thanks for someone finally calling it fake. This stuff is everywhere! And none dare call it fake wire. This stuff has been causing automobile fires because the resistance is too high.

Were those both Riser grade or Plenum grade? Very frightening if so.

@Chris123NT That used to be the difference between Plenum and not Plenum back in the day, IIRC.

One is old analog phone wire, the other digital CAT cable. The intended use dictates the type. Moe! Read a book.

One is plenum rated one is riser rated. It’s normal, and you can certify both of them with a proper fluke versiv tester to the TIA/EIA spec.

Looks like riser/plenum rated cable vs. plain ole PVC-insulated (which, almost all cheap CCA ethernet cables use). Admittedly, unoxidized aluminum is quite reactive. -I've heard stories from ISP techs about bunched CCA lines *exploding* from moisture-penetration and shorting.

Always make sure your cables meet specification. Generally, if Bluejeans Cable sells it, I buy it from them. That dude doesn't mess around. Everything meets specification, and installation rating is right on the page. He tries to get as much done in the US as possible.

I feel like the fire demo is more about if it's CL-2 rated for plenum vs the stuff that's allowed in walls and places where when it burns it's not being poor in the air supply. 🤷‍♂️

i can’t keep replying to the same shit over and over omfg yes the plenum matters but did you not see the damn wire actually catch? and the fact that afterwards it’s just cooked part of this is “it’s dangerous,” part of it is “this is how you tell them apart”

the sheath catching on fire has nothing to do with the conductor, and just getting copper conductors doesn't tell you that the sheath/jacket is proper materials.

This is really important, Fire is a real risk and the smoke from cheap cable kills. Thats why Plenum cable and cable ratings is a thing, 👍

Too many variables, bad comparison, first had a lot of exposed metal allowing more heat conductance along length of wire and was held in coolest part of the flame. Second wire had no metal exposed meaning all heat went to the insulation and it was held in hotter part of the flame
