Theater of the absurd. The IOC has lifted all restrictions on Russian athletes. Today, on the day this video is being recorded, our city is once again under shelling — yesterday was a day of mourning for those killed in the Russian attack. And now, seeing this absolutely shameful decision just feels like some kind of unbelievable absurdity. This decision is not about the neutrality of sport. This decision is about rejecting reality. The IOC completely ignores the facts that Russian sport plays a huge role in Russian propaganda. The FSB still remains in charge of the Russian anti-doping agency, and it is run by the very same people who poisoned Russian dissidents with “Novichok.” Yet the IOC ignores this fact. Russian athletes are fighting on the front lines, but the IOC calls them “innocent.” Russian athletes are involved in activities with kidnapped Ukrainian children, but the IOC doesn’t care about Ukrainian victims. They would rather disqualify Ukraine than face the reality of the present day. Sanctions were lifted from Russia solely based on a statement by the Russian Olympic Committee claiming they no longer operate in the occupied territories — even though the reality is completely different. The facts of their activities in the occupied territories are publicly known, but the IOC couldn’t care less. The current leadership of the IOC is a disgrace to the Olympic movement. These are people with no morality or principles whatsoever. In 1936, the Olympic Games already served as a tool for spreading the propaganda of one dictator. It looks like we are seeing exactly who inspires the current IOC leadership. National Olympic Committees (NOCs) must give a strong response to this shameful decision, and countries should finally consider imposing a visa ban on Russian athletes.

Soccer Headers Damage Brains Even Without Concussions, Large Study Finds | Carly Cassella, ScienceAlert The world's most popular sport is reckoning with serious health concerns. The largest study of its kind has now found that repetitively heading a soccer ball can negatively impact the brain, even in amateur players who don't report concussions. Among 352 amateur adult soccer players, those who took more than a thousand headers a year showed microscopic changes to the outer wrinkles of their brains, right behind their eyes, regardless of their age or sex. These players also performed slightly but significantly worse on memory and learning tests. "What's important about our study is that it shows, really for the first time, that exposure to repeated head impacts causes specific changes in the brain that, in turn, impair cognitive function," explains neuroscientist Michael Lipton at Columbia University. Lipton's lab has been leading research on how soccer heading impacts the brain for over a decade now. Contact sports, like American football, Australian rules football, and rugby, are also contending with the downsides of repetitive head trauma, but in these cases, the discussion is often framed as a concussion crisis typically reserved for professionals. Lipton's research at Columbia University suggests that even mild bumps to the head can add up, and it's not just professional athletes or those who report concussions who are affected. Previous studies by Lipton have shown alterations to white matter among amateur soccer players compared to swimmers. Meanwhile, other studies have found white matter changes even without a history of concussion. But linking these brain changes to clear alterations in cognitive function has proven tricky. Lipton and his team have now developed a novel method that detects damage in the outermost wrinkles of the brain – a tricky spot to study using diffusion magnetic resonance imaging (dMRI). This layer is called the cortical gray matter–white matter interface (GWI), and until recently, not much was known about it. Using their new imaging technique, Lipton and his team scanned the brains of amateur soccer players, who had played for at least five years and within the last six months. Those who said they took more headers showed significant changes in the GWI at the front of their brains – a spot consistent with the trajectory of a soccer ball during a header. The authors suspect that this injury site reflects a contrecoup force – a sort of bruise to the brain that occurs on the opposite side of the skull. Injuries to the GWI may have gone undetected or underestimated in other imaging studies, which is possibly why there are conflicting results on the neurological impact of soccer headers. A graduate student in Lipton's lab, Joan Song, developed a way to characterize what they were seeing in the MRI scans. "In healthy individuals, there's a sharp transition between these tissues," Song explains. "Here, we studied if an attenuation of this transition may occur with minor impacts caused by heading." Sure enough, the boundary between white and grey matter was fuzzier in those who took more headers. "It's very strong evidence that these microstructural changes are likely to be a cause of cognitive deficits," Lipton says. Further investigation is needed, but the findings suggest that the GWI is a good place to image in future studies on soccer heading impacts. "In healthy individuals, there's a sharp transition between these tissues," Song explains. "Here, we studied if an attenuation of this transition may occur with minor impacts caused by heading." Sure enough, the boundary between white and grey matter was fuzzier in those who took more headers. "It's very strong evidence that these microstructural changes are likely to be a cause of cognitive deficits," Lipton says. Further investigation is needed, but the findings suggest that the GWI is a good place to image in future studies on soccer heading impacts. 🦘🇦🇺My take on Ange Postecoglou. If you disagree, that's fine. Freedom of speech, your opinion might be listened to or not. Mine is, I know by who. That's what I care about. 🌏Postecoglou has coached every age group at national / international level on 3 continents. That's inspirational and commands respect, if he was to be found out, as he said, he'd have been a long time ago like these former pros who cry because they get a U19 team relegated (ask me the names). 🤓From a footballing standpoint, he's not making up theoretical shit like all these nerds jumping up on the Pro License barely coaching a team; and scrambling to figure out the reality of the sport/people in Phase 2, 3 doing the polar opposite to what they told everyone they'd do. 🧠The football Postecoglou sets up has room for decision making within a structure which is an extraordinary achievement from a coaching standpoint, and what every coach in the world should aspire to do. Ajax or Netherlands 1974, Nantes 1995, Rijkaard's Barcelona, Wenger's Arsenal. If you like "good football" , this is good football. If you want to win, pay more and get the best players. The correlation is right there. 🔁There's rotations everywhere (think triangles who tilt, carrier and two options short/long), and players have 2-3 options everytime. The right balance between combinations into feet and third man runs (third man runs are vital - and often forgotten when nerds coach teams and have a control kink) 🫡For that, you need a club culture of empowered players caring about the common good ; and also good enough to act selflessly to what the game demands (and actually execute it). ⚖️The challenge is that bang average off the mill pros do what they're told, can't do most things. And ones who can't do play the solo card - football is an individual sport masquerading as a team sport. 👀I can confidently second guess that the hesitation in collective movement suggest they're thinking in real time and not going "by the book" (which is microwave coaching). 👥How often Postecoglou talks about culture, turning up together for a meal before games. Old school, but actually grounded. This isn't a startup or UberEats. 🧘‍♂️There's a handful of adults coaching Premier League teams. Slot maybe, Howe, Emery, Frank, Glasner, Moyes, McKenna who value the holistic composition of performance: squad chemistry, work ethic, managing people and treating them as adults. People who do know the biggest paradox in the modern age is that lot of players are outstanding to think smart and execute fast in high pressure situations; yet are out of their depth when they have time and space to think. 🫣Chelsea 11v9 took half an hour to break down 9 fuckers on halfway line, and people know how badly it reflected on one of the worst assemblage of players ever seen pound for pound. And that's not Postecoglou's team. Then again, listen to who you want. Tremendous, organic (= player led) output. What you can do = the team's outlook. ⚽️I'm talking football there, not theory, not pattern playbook, not fiscal optimisation. 📊Spurs are working on relative budget. Don't budget CL football. Spend 40% turnover on wages, when Chelsea's etc... are 70% or Leicester 120%. 🏇💉It's like the only clean horse in a race when others are stuffed with red bull, cocaine and creatine. Njabulo Blom🔝 Quality player at Kaizer Chiefs❤️✌🏾 ■ How are we struggling for options in midfield? We can't even get Blom to enjoy football? ■ A match unfit Blom is still better than what we partner Cele with constantly there. ■ This boy doesn't want to play RB. Worse, he knows, and we know he's better than our preferred 6s. ■ How does he stay inspired when he's undervalued? We need to be less emotional and pick the best possible 11 with what we have before complaining about lack of quality. ■ Blom can't even have 2 starts because we have the coaches' favorite sons who deserve to play even when they offer nothing! ▪︎ The fans end up hating their own players because the coach forces them into the team even when they aren't helping the team. ■ Ntwari was kept until fans hated him. We could see he's struggling to adapt, but many still believed in him. Instead of limiting his game time in the early days until he adapted, the coach kept him there until fans started to see Ntwari as the only problem, he wasn't protected and now with Bvuma leaking, we can't look at Ntwari with the hope and positively we had in pre-season. ▪︎ Yet, Ntwari will go to his national team next week and pull world-class saves. ■ Same as Lilepo, he can be off for 60 minutes and just show up in a few moments but he will stay in the field, because once the coach trusts you, he doesn't want you to stay a second out even when you're not showing up. The only motivated player currently is Yusuf Maart because he doesn't even need a good performance to be preferred in this team. We need less emotional decisions, more tactical decisions, and support for these players. Let these boys know that a good performance will earn you a place in the team. Listen up everyone!! Today I finally let the humans off the couch by dragging my baby brother Kenji (yes, THAT Kenji, the 30-lb chaos gremlin with the face of an angel and the impulse control of a Roomba on Red Bull) on his Very First Official Group Outing™ with the elite squad: Cloe, Dug, and moi, the undisputed queen of bounce physics. And holy snowballs… the kid didn’t just survive. He ATE. Loose-leash heeling like he invented the damn sport. Scaling snow piles like a caffeinated mountain goat auditioning for the Olympics. Strutting over campus grates like they were red carpets and he was late for his close-up. Not one single squirrel sighting (rude, nature, get your life together), but we DID encounter a full-grown adult male human in a reindeer costume posing for photos like he invented Christmas. I stared. He blinked. I won. Meanwhile, the big dogs were out here doing premium-level snow acrobatics. I personally invented the sport of “maximum vertical bounce with bonus sass.” Cloe and Dug were serving looks and spins. Kenji? Too busy discovering the entire planet like it owed him rent money. Didn’t even glance at the other dogs. Zero zoomie meltdowns. Zero leash tantrums. Just pure, unfiltered “I’m the main character and y’all are background extras” energy.
