Cool footage of the wildlife observed on a small trail over a 6 month period from last fall to this spring. In particular, we captured some great footage of the Listening Point Pack and the Mithrandir Pack on this camera. The Listening Point Pack was 5 pack members (3 adults and two pups) and these are the wolves in most of the footage in this video. You can see two of the adults (the breeding male and a subordinate adult male) several times as well as the two pups. The December 2nd footage gives a great clear view of all 4 of these wolves. In two instances, it appears the Listening Point Pack killed deer near this camera as wolves were carrying deer legs past the camera on Jan 10 and Mar 3. The Mithrandir Pack was just a breeding pair last winter. You can see these wolves on November 11 and 20, and April 15. This area is on the periphery of their territory so not surprising we did not have many observations of them in this spot. And huge thanks to the Minnesota Environment and Natural Resources Trust Fund for their continued support of our project. Their support allows us to capture and share footage like this with everyone on a regular basis!

NFL players have 42x the risk of dying from ALS before age 50, according to a new study from Concussion & CTE Foundation, Mass General Brigham, Harvard, and the Boston University CTE Center that I coauthored and was published last week in eClinicalMedicine, an open-access journal from The Lancet. There is clearly a connection between repetitive head impacts, CTE, and ALS, and it affects more than just NFL players. Former college players are likely at elevated risk too, which doesn’t surprise me as two former players from my college football team, Harvard – Michael Vollmer ’90 and Mike Ernst ’83 – have both developed ALS. With only 33 NFL players – from 30 teams – dying of ALS between 1960-2019, having two from only college football programs is extremely unlikely unless it’s linked to playing football. Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) is a progressive disease that destroys the nerve cells controlling muscle movement. While ALS is uncommon in the general population, researchers say these findings provide the strongest evidence yet that we need to explore head impacts in sports as a cause of ALS.

There were several highlights of the trip: Very fruitful board discussions Stimulating meetings with new members of the leadership team A highly engaging town-hall dialogue with a huge gathering of young associates But I have to admit that the highlight for me was meeting young Shriya from the Ramana Maharishi Academy for the Blind, an NGO supported by the Tech Mahindra Foundation. She demonstrated how she uses ‘Annie’ the learning device created by Thinkerbell Labs, a startup whose seed round of funding I had the privilege of participating in. It’s incredibly gratifying when two entities that you have invested in, multiply their impact on the lives of people who deserve our support for their growth…

This is both an announcement and a love letter to the entire Base team. 💌 It's hard to believe how much we packed into the last year and more. I traveled around APAC covering builders and their stories, built the Base India community from the ground up, worked with creator communities, and built AI-powered distribution systems and products that changed how we shipped content. I marketed Baseapp, backed builders and projects across the ecosystem, and tried to wear every hat in between. Somewhere in it all, I became a sharper and better version of myself. So, I’ve got a bit of medical PTSD when it comes to going under. One week ago marked two years since I was wheeled into surgery to have rods fused from C2 to T2 in my spine—only to wake up paralyzed from the shoulders down. (Now it's from the waist down, but still.) About a year after that, I found myself in an induced coma, lost in fever dreams while doctors fought to stabilize my failing renal and respiratory systems. And now, in just two weeks, I’ll be going under again—for the first time since all of that. Needless to say, I'm carrying a lot of fear into this. Thankfully, my doctor has agreed to let me wear AirPods while being sedated and even while under. Music played a huge role in helping me find peace during my coma, so I need to be incredibly intentional about what I listen to this time. Last time, Bartender was the #1 song that let me soar above the coma and into a place I needed to go, a place that made me feel OK if this were it. I’m looking for soft, calming songs—not necessarily “Lover Lay Down” on repeat, but definitely not “Halloween” crashing through the anesthesia. So, I’ve got a bit of medical PTSD when it comes to going under. One week ago marked two years since I was wheeled into surgery to have rods fused from C2 to T2 in my spine—only to wake up paralyzed from the shoulders down. (Now it's from the waist down, but still.) About a year after that, I found myself in an induced coma, lost in fever dreams while doctors fought to stabilize my failing renal and respiratory systems. And now, in just two weeks, I’ll be going under again—for the first time since all of that. Needless to say, I'm carrying a lot of fear into this. Thankfully, my doctor has agreed to let me wear AirPods while being sedated and even while under. Music played a huge role in helping me find peace during my coma, so I need to be incredibly intentional about what I listen to this time. Last time, Bartender was the #1 song that let me soar above the coma and into a place I needed to go, a place that made me feel OK if this were it. I’m looking for soft, calming songs—not necessarily “Lover Lay Down” on repeat, but definitely not “Halloween” crashing through the anesthesia. I have access to every official DMB release, all the Live Trax, DMBLive, live releases etc. and I can convert just about any YouTube video. So I’m asking you—help me build this setlist. Help me use music to conquer terror. Be my guide.

Some people think I always have it all together at the poker table. While I appreciate those who compliment that I handle losses well, the truth is far from that on the inside. I was once again buried in yesterday’s game but got bailed out miraculously with this set over set. Jokingly, after the hand I say that poker players are some of the most miserable people I know. Except I wasn’t really joking. After the game, I proceeded to dump it back. The game soon broke and I couldn’t have felt more miserable. For some reason, between the breeding frustration from recent months to last night’s rollercoaster, I could feel the chemical imbalances finally coming all together in my brain screwing with me. It’s crazy to me that even after all these years of dealing with the swings, I still fall into the same mental pitfalls. Instead of just feeling grateful to be able to play in these insane games weekly plus finally being on the right end of this massive cooler, I focused on the negatives and felt pity for myself. Looking forward to playing zero poker for the next few days to regain perspective.

Doron Steinbrecher - who was freed from Gaza two weeks ago - recorded this message: "This whole thing takes me back to all the hostage videos I filmed and saw. But now I'm sitting comfortably on a couch with my family watching me in a warm and pleasant place. And as difficult as this is, it was important for me to film this video to convey my message and my request, and to show that I'm okay. It will take time and it's a process - it won't end in a week or two, but I'm here thanks to you, and I'm okay. Thank you, thank you to everyone who supported and embraced my family and are embracing me now, people who don't even know me. And I want to say thank you to all the soldiers and security forces. I'm watching and catching up on everything that happened in this surreal year, and I can see what an important and huge role they played both on October 7th and after, and I want to truly say - thank you. And to the families whose loved ones are still in captivity - you are not alone. We continue to fight for you, and we will do everything - I will do everything until everyone returns home and until you can close this circle, and we're together, until the end. The first moment I leave here, I'll be there with a sign in hand. I understand that everyone knows me from that terrible recording "They caught me, they caught me, they caught me" or as the blonde girl wearing pink, 31 years old from Kfar Aza. I spent two hours this week trying to figure out which hooks were actually winning across one of our ad accounts. Pulled a report, exported it to a sheet, then cross-referenced against last month, then opened a new tab… and THEN another one. The end of the road… It’s been an incredible 8 days on the road with indietrucker and I’m thankful he let me join him. We loaded and delivered several loads between Vegas and Charlotte, NC and I got to experience the amazing views of Wyoming and the lack of truck parking along the I-80 corridor. We stayed at 3 Truck Parking Club 🚚 🅿️♣️ locations in Nevada, Utah and Ohio that allowed us to trip plan and know we would get safely parked. For any CEOs out there that haven’t done a week long ride along with a driver, I highly suggest it. You will get to see first hand the daily pleasures and pains of being a truck driver in the US. You’ll get to experience the mental hurdles of being days on the road away from family, friends and your team. You’ll get to use your product first hand IRL and see what can be improved. This was our first trip together, but not the last. You the man Chris. Safe travels out there buddy.
